Johnson Sends House Home Early as Massie Unloads Over Hegseth, Epstein, and Unfinished Business

House Speaker Mike Johnson sent lawmakers home early Wednesday to campaign for the midterms, defending the House’s record even as Republican Rep. Thomas Massie blasted the decision and pointed to unfinished fights over the Iran war, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and the Jeffrey Epstein investigation. Johnson says lawmakers will remain on 48-hour notice to return if necessary.

“We’re calling off Congress? And we’re in the majority?” Massie demanded from the House floor.

Massie used an hourlong floor speech to attack Johnson’s leadership and argue Congress should remain in Washington. Among the matters left without votes were Massie’s resolution seeking Hegseth’s impeachment over actions connected to the Iran war and his effort to force the release of additional Epstein-related files. “I’m trying to get justice for the Epstein survivors,” Massie said. “I’m trying to stop a war.” Johnson countered that “the House has done its job” and dismissed the Hegseth impeachment effort as “a stunt.”

Johnson points to hundreds of bills passed during the session and major legislation signed into law, while critics point to the chamber’s shortened calendar. AP reports that, by one tally, 28 House days were canceled this year while four were added—a net reduction of 24 scheduled days. Before leaving Wednesday, lawmakers also passed legislation including sanctions on Russia (see below). Johnson called this Congress one of the most productive in decades; Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, by contrast, characterized the Republican majority as “do-nothing.” Jeffries should know… takes one to know one.

For Massie, who lost his Republican primary and is nearing the end of his House tenure, the confrontation became something of a final broadside against congressional leadership. He criticized U.S. involvement in Iran and Hegseth’s actions, while Johnson defended the secretary. “I’m not playing this game,” Massie said. “I am going to tell people what is going on up here.” The voters will get their turn soon enough; Congress, meanwhile, gets an early trip home.

China Presses Iran to Rein In Houthis as Red Sea Oil Route Comes Under Threat

China has privately urged Iran to use its influence over Yemen’s Houthis after Saudi Arabia appealed to Beijing for help, as the group’s rapid advance around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait threatens shipping and another crucial Middle East energy route. The request puts Beijing in an awkward spot: Iran is a major strategic and economic partner, but China also depends heavily on Gulf oil and trade.

With traffic through the Strait of Hormuz already severely disrupted, trouble at Bab el-Mandeb could squeeze two of the Middle East’s most important energy arteries at the same time. Reuters reported that only three commercial vessels transited Hormuz Wednesday, compared with 12 the previous day and a recent 10-day average of about 17.

According to three Iranian sources cited by Reuters, Beijing wants Tehran to use its influence with the Houthis to prevent the conflict from spreading further across the Red Sea. China’s foreign ministry publicly called for dialogue and said it does not want regional tensions spilling further into Yemen and the Red Sea. The Iranian sources said Beijing did not threaten economic consequences if Tehran declined to act.

China has some serious leverage. It has been Iran’s largest trading partner for more than a decade and remains the principal buyer of Iranian oil; Chinese purchases accounted for more than 80% of Iran’s seaborne oil exports in 2025, according to Kpler data cited by Reuters. But Beijing also has enormous interests elsewhere in the Gulf. “Iran can disrupt Hormuz. But at some point that leverage begins hurting the very power Tehran increasingly depends on,” Middle East Institute analyst Alex Vatanka told Reuters.

Whether Iran actually leans on the Houthis remains unclear. Tehran reportedly responded that regional stability depends on ending the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, while the Houthis’ territorial gains have strengthened their ability to threaten Red Sea shipping. China helped broker the 2023 restoration of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia; now Riyadh is effectively asking Beijing to demonstrate how much influence came with all that diplomacy.

Editor: China wanted cheap Iranian oil, booming Gulf trade, and the prestige of Middle East diplomacy. Now everybody would like Beijing to come downstairs and deal with the kids. This, by the way, is Saudi Arabia’s response to asking Trump for help and getting the cold shoulder. So now they’re becoming more aligned with China and less with the US. Guess what happens next?

Canada Eyes Historic EU Alliance as Trump Threatens Europe With Tariffs

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the EU’s proposal for Canada to become its first “associate member,” setting up a potentially historic realignment of transatlantic relations as President Donald Trump threatens additional tariffs if he views the arrangement as hostile to U.S. interests. India has already warned Washington about potential consequences. The timing makes the equation more complicated: Disruptions to Middle Eastern energy supplies have increased the importance of alternative crude sources for Asian importers.

The real question now moves from Capitol Hill to the White House. The legislation creates potentially powerful economic weapons, but their impact depends heavily on how Trump chooses to deploy them. Russia has already said the new sanctions, if signed, would complicate efforts to reach a settlement in Ukraine. In other words, Congress has loaded the tariff cannon; what happens next depends on whether—and where—the president fires it.

Flock Touted Its Surveillance Cameras as Made in America. Now It’s Not So Clear.

The change comes as Flock faces growing scrutiny over the nationwide network of cameras used by police and other agencies to track vehicles.

Tens of thousands of cameras are watching American roads, but WIRED couldn’t determine where Flock is currently putting them together. Import records reviewed by WIRED show Flock increasingly receiving commodity cameras, radar systems, and other components from Primax Electronics in Thailand. Primax is headquartered in Taiwan and operates manufacturing facilities in several countries, including China and Thailand. Flock told WIRED that all products it builds comply with National Defense Authorization Act requirements.

Flock’s manufacturing story has changed considerably. Early prototypes used cameras pulled from Android phones purchased through Alibaba, while later cameras were assembled by Flock employees in Atlanta. Marketing from 2019 called them “manufactured in the United States”; in 2020, Flock said “made in the USA”; and in 2021 it specified assembly by “Flock Safety in Atlanta, GA.” Final assembly later shifted to contract facilities operated by East West Manufacturing in North Carolina and Plexus in Wisconsin, according to a source cited by WIRED, while many components continued coming from Asia.

The supply-chain questions matter because Flock’s technology has already generated a fierce privacy debate. Police say automated license-plate readers can help deter and solve crimes, while critics point to documented cases involving improper tracking and data-sharing concerns.

Flock has been clearer about its new Alpha surveillance drone, announcing a Smyrna, Georgia, facility to assemble drones and solar panels. But for its signature license-plate cameras, WIRED found no current answer to the basic question of final assembly location. Wherever the cameras are screwed together, the larger issue increasingly confronting Flock is transparency—about its hardware, its supply chain, and the enormous surveillance network those little black boxes have become.

If Kevin Warsh wanted a quiet honeymoon as Fed chairman, monetary policy apparently had other plans.

But inflation and the bond market are pulling Warsh the other way. Three Fed officials dissented from July’s decision to hold rates steady, favoring a quarter-point increase instead, and recent inflation data has strengthened the case for tightening. Reuters’ latest polling found a majority of economists expecting Wednesday’s hike and at least one additional increase by the end of March.

The bigger story may be what Warsh says after the decision. Markets will be listening for clues about whether Wednesday represents a one-off move or the beginning of another tightening cycle. Warsh has been skeptical of the Fed’s traditional “dot plot” projections and reluctant to provide detailed forward guidance, making his 2:30 p.m. news conference particularly important. Those are Massie’s allegations; Hegseth has not been removed or convicted of any offense, and the Pentagon has defended his leadership.

The resolution goes beyond Iran. Massie also accuses Hegseth of disregarding congressional war-powers directives, improperly using military power abroad, and retaliating against critics. The impeachment push comes near the end of Massie’s congressional career after he lost his Republican primary earlier this year. The House’s own floor record confirms that Massie gave formal notice shortly after noon Tuesday of his intention to introduce the privileged resolution.

The result is an unusually public confrontation between a Republican lawmaker and a Republican administration over presidential war powers. The House now has to dispose of Massie’s privileged resolution through its procedures, putting members on record over Hegseth and the conduct of the Iran conflict as Congress approaches the November midterms. Whatever happens to the impeachment effort, Massie has ensured that the constitutional argument over who gets to authorize an American war gets another turn on the House floor.

Judge Blocks DHS From Threatening ICE Critic Over Harsh Email

A federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction protecting David Streever from further federal action tied to a warning notice he received after sending a harsh email criticizing former acting ICE director Todd Lyons. The order prevents DHS and ICE from taking additional steps based on that notice, which warned Streever that he “may be in violation of federal law,” while his First Amendment lawsuit proceeds.

Calling a government official terrible things may make for lousy dinner conversation, but that doesn’t automatically make it a federal crime.

Streever’s email compared Lyons to a Nazi, called him a “monstrous human being” and said he would be tormented by his conscience. Months later, Homeland Security Investigations officers attempted to locate Streever at his home, an airport and a hotel before leaving the warning notice. Streever sued in July, arguing that the government’s response chilled constitutionally protected political speech. Judge Rudolph Contreras concluded that Streever had shown sufficient grounds for preliminary relief, writing that the threat of investigation or prosecution forced him “to self-censor under that threat.”

The government defended its investigation by pointing to increased threats against public officials and said the investigation had been closed before Streever filed his lawsuit. According to NPR, however, the government’s court filing did not contend that Streever’s email constituted a prosecutable violent threat. The injunction blocks officials from taking further action based on the warning notice or issuing substantially similar threats aimed at Streever’s protected expression while the case continues.

The ruling is preliminary rather than a final judgment on the lawsuit, but it gives Streever immediate protection while the underlying First Amendment claims are litigated.

Editor: The government can investigate actual threats against public officials. The constitutional problem comes when angry criticism gets treated like one without alleging that it actually crossed that line. That’s precisely the boundary this lawsuit is now asking the courts to police.

J.B. Hunt Stock Plunges as Trucking Giant Warns Earnings Will Drop Up to 10%

J.B. Hunt shares plunged more than 10% Wednesday after the trucking company warned that third-quarter earnings are expected to fall 5% to 10% from the second quarter. CFO Brad Delco said a combination of roughly $25 million in additional hiring-related expenses and at least a $10 million fuel-price headwind will weigh on results.

Apparently “preparing for growth” sounds considerably less exciting when it comes with $35 million-plus in new costs.

Delco said J.B. Hunt is spending more on recruiting, advertising, onboarding, training, and sign-on bonuses as it positions the company for increased business. “We kind of want to be transparent with investors and give an update that in light of these costs that are sort of hitting us, we are expecting our Q2 to Q3 earnings to actually drop 5% to 10%,” he told the Morgan Stanley Industrials conference.

Then there’s diesel. Delco described recent fuel-price movements as “some of the most radical and abnormal swings” the company has experienced, with record-high diesel prices creating at least a $10 million headwind. J.B. Hunt expects improving freight volumes to help offset some of those pressures, and Delco characterized much of the earnings squeeze as a timing problem rather than evidence that the company’s growth plans have gone sideways.

Investors weren’t inclined to wait around for the happier part of the story. The stock’s double-digit decline came after an extraordinary run, with J.B. Hunt shares having nearly doubled over the previous year. Delco says the company is still working to repair margins and has “a long way to go.” In trucking terms, then: The destination may be growth, but Wall Street just noticed how much fuel this trip is burning.

Canada Could Become the EU’s First ‘Associate Member’ as Trans-Atlantic Alliances Shift

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says she wants Canada to become the European Union’s first “associate member,” potentially creating an entirely new relationship between the 27-nation bloc and one of America’s closest neighbors. The proposal would deepen Canadian-European ties in defense, energy, technology, critical minerals and economic security without making Canada a full EU member.

Canada isn’t moving to Europe, but politically and economically, the Atlantic suddenly looks a lot narrower.

Von der Leyen made the proposal Wednesday during her annual address to the European Parliament, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in attendance. “We must urgently reimagine our partnerships. And build global coalitions for our resilience and democracies,” she said, adding that she wanted to open the door for Canada to become the EU’s first associate member. EU lawmakers responded with a standing ovation. The idea remains a proposal, and exactly what “associate membership” would entail has yet to be negotiated.

The possibilities are substantial: Integrating defense supply chains, expanding Canadian energy exports to Europe, cooperating on AI and digital rules, linking cloud and data infrastructure, and potentially creating new travel and work arrangements. Canada and the EU already have extensive ties, including their trade agreement and growing defense cooperation. Canada’s government said earlier this month that the two sides are working on economic security, defense-industrial cooperation, critical minerals, and a digital trade agreement.

There are major hurdles. Access to the EU single market normally comes with obligations involving EU rules, budget contributions and worker mobility, and Canadian officials have indicated they aren’t prepared to accept all of those conditions. Canada’s opposition Conservatives have also criticized the associate-membership concept over sovereignty and regulatory concerns. So nobody is sewing a maple leaf onto the EU flag just yet. But the proposal itself is significant: Canada and Europe are openly exploring a new institutional relationship as both seek to diversify their economic and security partnerships.

Kennedy Center Closes as Trump Ties $257 Million Renovation to Fight Over His Name

The Kennedy Center’s board voted Tuesday to immediately close its main building for a roughly two-year renovation, hours after a federal judge again ruled that President Donald Trump’s name cannot be placed on the national memorial without congressional approval. Trump subsequently said the renovation won’t begin while the ruling is on appeal and said it won’t proceed if the courts ultimately reject the naming plan.

The building is closed, the renovation is on hold, and the president’s name is still not going on the wall—Washington has discovered its own performance art.

The board cited safety concerns in ordering the immediate shutdown. Kennedy Center officials pointed to deteriorating structural components, water intrusion and a recent incident in which a section of ceiling plaster fell roughly 60 feet into the Grand Foyer without injuring anyone. Critics have disputed management’s characterization of the danger, while center officials say major construction cannot safely proceed with the building occupied. Programming is expected to continue at the Reach and other venues.

Then there’s the name. U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that the board cannot install memorials honoring Trump at the Kennedy Center without Congress authorizing the change. “Simply put, Defendants cannot install memorials for President Trump or anyone or anything else at the Kennedy Center without Congress’s blessing,” Cooper wrote. Trump responded that if the appeals court rules against the center and the Supreme Court doesn’t reverse that decision, the renovation “will not take place.” Congress has already appropriated $257 million for the project.

Meanwhile, the Kennedy Center is dealing with a serious financial squeeze. Internal documents cited by The Washington Post said the institution could soon struggle to meet payroll and routine maintenance expenses, while ticket sales and fundraising have declined. Center leadership says Trump’s involvement can attract new donors; critics argue the upheaval surrounding his takeover and the naming dispute contributed to the losses. Those competing claims are now tangled together with the safety problems, renovation and litigation—leaving one of America’s best-known performing-arts institutions closed while its future gets argued over in court.

The Supreme Court rejected President Donald Trump’s attempt to impose new restrictions on mail ballots before the November midterms, leaving states free to continue using their existing vote-by-mail systems. In other words: The rules of an election already underway won’t be rewritten while voters are voting.

Election officials argued there simply wasn’t enough time to overhaul their systems before November. Pentagon Report Reveals Heavy U.S. Aircraft and Base Losses From Iran War

A Pentagon inspector general report says Iranian attacks destroyed or damaged dozens of U.S. aircraft, hit hundreds of buildings and structures across the Middle East, wounded at least 417 American service members, and exposed growing strains on U.S. munitions and military supply chains. The report covers the war from February 28 through June 30 and provides the first official accounting of losses that, according to Al Jazeera, are substantially greater than previously acknowledged.

The biggest revelation isn’t that Iran hit back—it’s how much damage those attacks actually did.

The aircraft tally is substantial: As many as 30 MQ-9 Reaper drones were destroyed, along with at least four F-15Es, an A-10, and four AH-6 helicopters deliberately destroyed after becoming unrecoverable. An F-35A was damaged, as were multiple KC-135 tankers, an E-3 Sentry, helicopters, and other surveillance aircraft. At least 11 U.S. military personnel were reported killed in action, seven died in non-hostile incidents (accidents, medical events, self harm, or environmental factors), and at least 417 were wounded in Iranian attacks through June 30.

The damage wasn’t confined to aircraft. CENTCOM reported that Iranian attacks damaged or destroyed hundreds of buildings and structures at American military installations across Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman, and Jordan. U.S. diplomatic facilities in Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE suffered an estimated $184 million in damage, including nearly $157 million connected to more than 600 attacks against the U.S. mission in Iraq. The watchdog also identified logistical problems, including “bottlenecks” in supply chains and difficulties supporting forces across the region.

That supply problem may be the politically awkward part. The report says U.S. munitions inventories are under pressure even as Trump has insisted America has “virtually unlimited” ammunition and is producing “more Exquisite and Elite Weapons than at any time in our History.” Whatever one’s view of the war, the Pentagon watchdog’s accounting makes one thing difficult to spin away: Iran demonstrated an ability to impose meaningful costs on American forces and infrastructure across a remarkably wide geographic footprint.

Houthis Seize Crucial Red Sea Oil Chokepoint in Lightning Yemen Offensive

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis seized the port city of Mokha and strategically vital Perim Island, giving the group control over a critical position in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait and putting another major global energy corridor at risk. The offensive came after months of preparation and exploited divisions among the Houthis’ Yemeni opponents and their Saudi and Emirati sponsors while attention was focused on the wider war with Iran.

With the Strait of Hormuz already under pressure, the world now has another oil chokepoint sitting within reach of an Iran-aligned force.

The Houthis reportedly moved thousands of troops and weapons around Mokha beginning in August, then used their control over Yemeni telecommunications to monitor opponents, spread confusion, and intimidate rival forces. They captured Mokha on Thursday and Perim Island the following day. The island sits in the middle of the roughly 18-mile-wide Bab al-Mandeb, the gateway connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.

Helping the Houthis was an opposition that looks less like an army than a committee meeting with artillery. A dispute between Saudi Arabia and the UAE fractured the anti-Houthi coalition, and the UAE withdrew from the war. Yemen analyst Mohammed al-Basha summed up the imbalance neatly: “The Houthis have one leader, one ideology, and a clear vision. The anti-Houthi forces have eight armies and multiple commands.” Saudi Arabia, already focused on Iran, reportedly declined pleas from anti-Houthi forces for air support as the offensive unfolded.

The consequences extend far beyond Yemen. Saudi oil exports are already threatened by fighting around the Strait of Hormuz, and disruption at Bab al-Mandeb could further squeeze energy supplies and push oil prices higher. Removing the Houthis from Perim Island could drag outside powers back into Yemen, yet even losing the island wouldn’t eliminate the threat: The group retains missiles and drones capable of targeting Red Sea shipping. As Kendall put it, “They are always going to be able to hold bits of the Red Sea to ransom. The world only pays attention when it affects their wallets.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi will travel to China on September 16 for talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, putting Beijing more directly into the diplomatic maneuvering surrounding the Iran war. China has called for a ceasefire and negotiated settlement that protects Iranian sovereignty and reopens the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global energy supplies.

With Washington and Tehran still trading blows, Iran is taking its case to the one major power with both enormous economic exposure to the conflict and significant diplomatic leverage.

China’s Foreign Ministry announced that Wang will hold talks with Araqchi during Wednesday’s visit. Beijing is diplomatically aligned with Tehran but also has a powerful economic incentive to cool things down: Continued instability in the Middle East and disruption around Hormuz threaten energy supplies and global trade. The visit comes as Iran’s ability to inflict damage on American forces has become clearer, with a Pentagon report documenting extensive damage to U.S. bases, aircraft losses, and growing pressure on American munitions inventories.

There’s also an increasingly complicated U.S.-China subplot. President Donald Trump on Sunday rejected a Wall Street Journal report that China supplied Iran with satellite imagery of a U.S. base in Jordan that assisted an Iranian attack that killed three American troops in July. That allegation now hangs over the Araqchi-Wang talks, even as Beijing publicly advocates negotiations rather than an expansion of the war.

And the diplomatic calendar makes Araqchi’s trip especially interesting: Trump is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in the United States on September 24, although Beijing has not yet confirmed that meeting. That gives China an opportunity to hear directly from Tehran before any Trump-Xi encounter—and potentially position itself as an intermediary between two governments that aren’t exactly exchanging holiday cards.

San Francisco Teen Dies in City’s First Fatal Cychlorphine Overdose

The death of 16-year-old Dante Lacourte has become San Francisco’s first fatal overdose linked to cychlorphine, a synthetic opioid health officials estimate is 10 times more potent than fentanyl and cannot be detected by fentanyl test strips. Lacourte was found dead by his mother at their Lower Nob Hill home on April 7, launching a police investigation into where the pills came from and who supplied them.

Even a fraction of a counterfeit pill containing this drug can be fatal.

Police searched Lacourte’s phone, identified suspected sources of the pills, and conducted controlled drug purchases before serving warrants. San Francisco police subsequently arrested four suspected dealers and searched three residences. During searches connected to two suspects, officers said they seized approximately 20,000 pills containing suspected fentanyl, counterfeit Xanax, oxycodone, hydrocodone, and cyclobenzaprine, along with MDMA, black tar heroin, firearms, and cash. All four suspects face multiple drug-related charges.

The frightening wrinkle is cychlorphine itself. San Francisco’s Department of Public Health said, “Even a fraction of a counterfeit pill can kill someone.” Police have since retested counterfeit pills from earlier cases and found some containing cychlorphine, suggesting the substance may have been circulating before authorities knew exactly what they were dealing with. Investigators are now working with the FDA to determine whether pills seized in the latest searches also contain the synthetic opioid.

Behind all those drug names and police seizures is a 16-year-old kid. His family described Lacourte as a former gymnast who loved performing aerial stunts while skiing. That’s worth remembering because “first cychlorphine overdose” sounds like a statistic until you remember what created it: A teenager went home with a pill, his mother later found him dead, and an entirely new drug threat suddenly had a name.

Editor: Counterfeit pills were already Russian roulette with fentanyl in the chamber. Now authorities are finding something potentially far more potent that the standard fentanyl test strip can’t even see. That’s not a new drug trend. That’s a new layer of horror.

Saudi Arabia Shuts Critical Oil Pipeline as Attacks Put Global Crude Supply at Risk

Oil prices jumped Monday after Saudi Arabia shut its massive East-West pipeline, cutting off a crucial route designed to bypass the increasingly dangerous Strait of Hormuz. Crude markets have another chokepoint problem—and this one can move 7 million barrels a day.

WTI futures climbed 4.2% to $104.23 a barrel while Brent rose 4.2% to $108.85, after both benchmarks gained roughly 9% last week.

The shutdown followed drone attacks launched from Iraq that damaged the East-West pipeline, including what appears to be serious damage to a pump station. Riyadh has not said how long the pipeline will remain offline, but analyst Andy Lipow warned:

Saudi Arabia may be able to bypass the damaged pump and restore the pipeline at reduced capacity, which could explain why crude hasn’t gone completely vertical.

The pipeline matters because it carries Saudi crude from production areas near the Persian Gulf across the kingdom to Red Sea export terminals, avoiding Hormuz altogether. Analyst Janiv Shah said Saudi inventories could cushion exports for roughly five to seven days, but an extended shutdown could quickly tighten supplies. Kpler’s Matt Smith estimates a month-long outage, combined with drawdowns at Yanbu, could cost the market 120 million barrels of exports.

Meanwhile, the security picture is getting uglier. A planned Oman meeting between Iran and Gulf Arab states over Hormuz was postponed after the pipeline attack, another tanker was attacked Sunday, and Iran-allied Houthis have been advancing around Yemen’s Bab el-Mandeb Strait after previously declaring a maritime embargo of Saudi Arabia. That potentially puts pressure on both ends of the Red Sea route just as Saudi Arabia needs it most.

There’s also a political dimension. President Donald Trump selected Warsh while publicly seeking lower interest rates, and a hike would arrive shortly before November’s congressional elections. Reuters reports that Warsh could theoretically rally enough policymakers around another hold, but several Fed officials have already indicated concern about the pace of disinflation. Warsh also dislikes giving forward guidance, meaning Wednesday’s press conference could become an exercise in explaining a hike without committing to what comes next.

That “what comes next” question may matter even more than Wednesday’s decision. A separate Reuters poll found a narrow majority of economists surveyed expect at least one additional increase by the end of March 2027, while futures markets have been pricing substantial odds of further tightening. If the Fed hikes, households, businesses, and investors will immediately start trying to determine whether it’s a one-off inflation warning or the opening shot of another tightening cycle.

Kennedy Center Warns of Bankruptcy and Could Close as Early as Tuesday

The Kennedy Center could close its main building as early as Tuesday as officials warn it faces “certain fiscal collapse” within weeks and serious structural problems that they say make continued occupancy unsafe. A 57-page board packet obtained by The Washington Post lays out simultaneous financial and physical crises confronting one of Washington’s most prominent cultural institutions.

Officials say the center could soon be unable to make payroll or pay routine maintenance bills—and they argue President Donald Trump’s fundraising help could be crucial to avoiding bankruptcy. The Trump-led board is scheduled to consider resolutions Tuesday addressing the financial emergency and whether to close the main building immediately. The financial proposal says Trump has offered to help raise the money needed to keep the center operating during renovations, while officials argue public recognition of his role would help secure that involvement.

The numbers are grim. Earlier internal forecasts obtained by The Post projected the center would collect about $124 million of the $220 million in revenue it had budgeted for the fiscal year, leaving an estimated $23 million deficit even after spending cuts. The Post previously reported that ticket sales and fundraising declined after Trump took control of the board and his name was added to the building; a federal judge later ruled that only Congress could rename the center and ordered Trump’s name removed. Center representatives have attributed the financial problems to mismanagement by previous leadership and have said Trump attracted new donors. Because—of course! It’s NEVER Trump’s fault.

Then there’s the building itself. During a Sept. 4 storm, officials say a roughly four-by-five-foot section of ceiling plaster fell about 60 feet inside the Grand Foyer. Nobody was injured. Engineers also found severe structural corrosion in 46 of roughly half of the building’s 278 exterior soffit panels examined, with another 93 showing mild-to-moderate corrosion. A draft resolution says management and consultants concluded the building is “unsafe for continued occupancy.” The newer Reach expansion would remain open, with performances potentially continuing at other venues.

The fight over Trump’s name isn’t finished, either. Trustees are being presented with 10 possible inscriptions for the building, while lawyers representing Rep. Joyce Beatty, who has challenged efforts to put Trump’s name on the center, continue opposing the proposals in court. Meanwhile, trustees previously approved a roughly $250 million renovation and two-year shutdown. Tuesday could determine whether that planned closure becomes an immediate one instead.

Trump Says a United Ireland Would Be ‘Fantastic’ During Dublin Visit

President Donald Trump said Saturday that he would “love to see” the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland unified, an unusually direct presidential intervention into a question deliberately left to voters under the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. The unit is also expected to receive a significant budget increase when the new fiscal year begins Oct. 1. The broader restructuring could bring leadership from outside the NSA, a possibility that has reportedly unsettled some agency insiders.

AI is clearly getting a seat near the head of the table. Since taking over in March, Rudd has emphasized artificial intelligence and commercial AI technology, while the NSA has introduced an internal desktop AI tool called “Ask Mary.” The agency has also pursued access to leading commercial AI models, and the administration has proposed billions in additional spending on IT and computing capabilities. Exactly how the five new organizations will interact with—or replace—the NSA’s existing bureaucracy remains unclear.

That uncertainty is notable because the NSA has been here before. Its previous major restructuring, “NSA 21,” began in 2016 and was given two years to roll out, yet one former official told The Post that parts remain unfinished. This time, according to one former official, leadership recognizes the speed and uncertainty involved: Rudd “admitted that they don’t know how they are going to do it, so they are going to rush into reversible decisions, in case it is wrong.” For an agency believed to employ more than 30,000 people while conducting some of America’s most sensitive intelligence operations, “reversible” could become a very important word.

Inflation Sticks at 3.4% as Gas and Diesel Push the Fed Toward a Rate Hike

U.S. inflation refused to budge in August, holding at 3.4% year over year while consumer prices jumped 0.4% from July, driven heavily by gasoline and other fuels. Gasoline alone rose 3.9% for the month and accounted for more than a third of the overall CPI increase, while diesel and other motor fuels surged 9.6%.

The inflation problem isn’t disappearing—it’s moving from the gas pump into everything the gas pump helps deliver.

There was at least some relief in the grocery aisle. Food prices rose just 0.1% for the second consecutive month, grocery prices overall were unchanged, and fruits and vegetables fell 0.4%. But record diesel prices threaten to work their way through transportation costs and eventually onto store shelves. Housing inflation, meanwhile, has been slowing, providing an important counterweight to the energy spike.

The Fed’s headache is underneath the headline number. Core CPI, which strips out food and energy, increased 0.3% in August—above economists’ expectations for 0.2% and the largest monthly increase since April. Reuters reported that markets subsequently priced in roughly a 91% chance of a rate increase next week, up from about 72% a day earlier. Ellen Zentner of Morgan Stanley Wealth Management summed up the predicament: “It wasn’t as hot as yesterday’s PPI, but today’s CPI left the Fed with less room to maneuver as it tries to maintain its inflation-fighting credentials.”

The political stakes are considerable heading into the November midterms, with gasoline and food prices remaining highly visible household expenses. Sen. John Kennedy put the cost-of-living problem rather succinctly on NBC’s “Meet the Press”: “The economy is solid, but inflation sucks.” Whatever happens at the Fed next week, 3.4% inflation remains well above its 2% target—and expensive energy is making the road back considerably harder.

Production remains below prewar levels, but U.S. and Middle Eastern officials say Tehran is assembling both liquid- and solid-propellant missiles while attempting to establish additional underground production sites.

That’s a pretty significant comeback for a missile program that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared “functionally destroyed” in April.

Intelligence reportedly shows activity at several underground locations, including the Khojir missile complex southeast of Tehran. Iran’s biggest advantage may be the warehouse inventory it accumulated before the war: finished warheads, airframes, guidance systems and other components that can now be assembled into weapons. A U.S. official told the Journal that Tehran could have enough components to assemble at least a couple hundred missiles, while former CIA analyst Jim Lamson said the ultimate number could reach much higher depending on the size of Iran’s stockpiles and how many underground facilities remain operational.

The rebuilding has limits. U.S. and Israeli strikes damaged industrial facilities needed to manufacture missiles and their components, while the naval blockade has complicated Iran’s ability to import materials needed for solid fuel. The Pentagon says the U.S. destroyed up to 90% of Iran’s drone, ballistic-missile and naval industrial base. But Tehran has also repaired roads, reopened tunnel entrances and used the relative calm of the summer to restore military capabilities.

And that’s the larger problem: destroying missiles is apparently easier than destroying the system designed to keep making them. Nicole Grajewski of Sciences Po told the Journal that Iran’s missile infrastructure has “quicker regenerative capacity than the nuclear program” and is widely dispersed. Iran continues firing missiles at U.S. positions in the region even as it rebuilds, meaning the contest is increasingly about endurance—how quickly Tehran can replenish missiles versus how quickly the U.S. and its allies can replenish the interceptors used to shoot them down.

Editor: The Pentagon says it wrecked Iran’s missile industry. Iran appears to have responded by moving the assembly line downstairs. That’s not exactly the victory-lap ending anyone had in mind.

25 Years After 9/11, Airport Security Knows a Lot More About You—But Has Anything Really Changed?

Twenty-five years after 9/11 transformed American air travel, the obvious question isn’t whether airport security has changed—it plainly has—but whether we’ve traded one kind of vulnerability for a system in which surveillance has become an ordinary part of getting from Point A to Point B. TSA checkpoints, intelligence sharing, REAL ID, passenger vetting, advanced scanners and facial-recognition systems have all become part of the post-9/11 security architecture. Government auditors have also documented privacy concerns surrounding facial recognition, including how travelers are notified and how personal information is handled.

Has anything really changed? Yes. We used to worry about Big Brother watching us; now we’re debating whether his camera makes the airport line move faster.

Before 9/11, private contractors generally handled passenger screening, non-ticketed family members could walk to the gate and travelers faced far fewer restrictions on what they carried aboard. Today, security begins well before you reach the metal detector. Airlines and government agencies exchange passenger information, TSA conducts identity and security vetting, and biometric systems can compare a traveler’s face against an existing image. TSA itself describes biometrics as a way to increase assurance of traveler identity and automate parts of checkpoint processing.

That doesn’t mean every traveler is secretly being followed everywhere, and calling the United States a literal “surveillance state” goes beyond what the evidence here establishes. But the concern isn’t imaginary, either. GAO has documented expanding federal use of facial recognition and previously identified shortcomings in privacy notices, oversight and monitoring of how facial-recognition systems were being used. Meanwhile, a DHS rule that took effect in December 2025 broadened biometric collection authority for noncitizens entering and leaving the United States. The government’s position is that these systems improve identity verification and security; the civil-liberties question is how much information should be collected, how long it should be retained, who gets access and how meaningful opting out actually is.

And that’s the strange legacy of 25 years of airport security: some of the most intrusive-looking technology can simultaneously make travel less intrusive. Shoes can stay on, trusted travelers can move faster, digital identification can replace repeated document checks, and future AI-assisted scanners could reduce the need to rummage through bags. Security has unquestionably changed. So has our definition of normal. The unresolved question isn’t whether technology can make us safer—it’s how much personal information Americans are willing to exchange for that safety, and whether safeguards will keep pace when yesterday’s extraordinary security measure becomes tomorrow’s invisible infrastructure.

Trump’s $5,000 Checks Would Cost $1.3 Trillion—And Congress Holds the Checkbook

President Donald Trump’s proposal to send $5,000 to roughly 270 million American adults would cost about $1.35 trillion, potentially adding enormously to a federal deficit already approaching $1.8 trillion annually unless Congress paired the payments with equivalent spending cuts or new revenue. The national debt has already passed $40 trillion, according to the figures cited by AP, and the proposed checks would cost roughly as much as the federal government’s projected interest expense for fiscal 2026. In other words, this isn’t finding five grand underneath the Treasury’s couch cushions.

Where does the $1.35 trillion come from? That’s the trillion-dollar question—and so far there isn’t a funded answer.

Trump has previously suggested tariff revenue could finance payments, but AP reports that available tariff revenue wouldn’t cover a program of this magnitude. Borrowing the money would increase the deficit by roughly $1.35 trillion if there were no offsets, meaning a $1.8 trillion annual deficit could mathematically become roughly $3.15 trillion if the entire program landed in one fiscal year and nothing else changed. Borrowing would also add approximately the same amount to federal debt. Alternatively, Congress could raise taxes, dedicate other revenue or cut spending elsewhere. Those choices would produce very different fiscal outcomes, but somebody ultimately has to finance the checks.

Then there’s inflation. Dumping more than $1 trillion of purchasing power into an economy already experiencing above-target inflation would increase consumer demand, although the size and timing of the inflation effect would depend on how much recipients spent, saved or used to repay debt—and whether the payments were deficit-financed or offset elsewhere. Federal Reserve research identifies pandemic stimulus payments and the accompanying surge in goods demand among contributors to the post-COVID inflation episode. That doesn’t establish that $5,000 checks would mechanically recreate 2021, but it explains why economists quoted by AP are worried about adding a giant fiscal stimulus while inflation is already elevated.

Could Trump simply order Treasury to start printing checks? Under the ordinary constitutional framework, no. Article I’s Appropriations Clause says money cannot be drawn from the Treasury except pursuant to appropriations made by law, and Congressional Research Service analysis describes that framework as a restraint on executive spending authority. Congress could enact legislation authorizing the payments—Sen. Bernie Moreno has said he would prepare such legislation—but a presidential announcement by itself isn’t an appropriation. As for whether the promise constitutes a criminal “bribe,” that’s a different question. AP reports legal experts don’t regard the proposal as straightforward vote buying because the proposed payments aren’t conditioned on an individual casting a vote for a particular candidate or party. The election-linked framing may invite political criticism, but that isn’t the same thing as satisfying the elements of a criminal bribery or vote-buying offense.

So will those $5,000 checks actually arrive? Right now they’re a proposal, not enacted spending. Trump has previously proposed payments funded by DOGE savings and tariffs that were not ultimately distributed, and this version would require overcoming the basic question of congressional authorization plus finding roughly $1.3 trillion. Until legislation appropriating the money is enacted—or some other valid statutory authority is identified—Americans shouldn’t mistake a campaign-stage promise for a Treasury payment schedule.

Editor: Five thousand dollars sounds terrific right up until you notice Washington is already borrowing heavily, paying enormous interest on the debt and fighting inflation. The government can absolutely mail everybody money. The fascinating part always comes later, when we discover who actually paid for it.

Trump Wants AI Data Centers on America’s Public Lands—and Interior Is Looking for Places to Put Them

The Bureau of Land Management has reportedly ordered state directors to identify federal land suitable for AI data centers, part of President Trump’s broader effort to accelerate America’s AI infrastructure buildout using public property. The Washington Sun reports that state officials were given just three days to compile potential sites, even as BLM contends with significant staffing vacancies and questions about whether remote federal lands have enough electricity, water and infrastructure to support enormous computing facilities. The administration says the effort serves economic prosperity, technological leadership and national security.

The government manages 245 million acres of public land, and some of the world’s richest technology companies would very much like somewhere to park their electricity-guzzling computers.

Trump’s July 2025 executive order explicitly directs Interior and Energy to make appropriate federal sites available for qualifying data-center projects and calls for faster environmental permitting. The order covers projects exceeding 100 megawatts of new AI-related electrical load and also opens the door to federal financial support including loans, loan guarantees, grants and tax incentives. The White House argues that faster construction is necessary for U.S. technological and national-security competitiveness.

The controversy is over what happens when that national AI push meets land that belongs to the public. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has met with executives from Amazon, energy companies and other businesses involved in the AI infrastructure boom, according to calendars reviewed by the Washington Sun. Critics fear development is being prioritized too aggressively, particularly when BLM employees must evaluate environmental effects involving water, power, wildlife and other land uses. That’s not a trivial responsibility: BLM’s statutory mission requires managing its lands for multiple uses while conserving natural, historical and cultural resources. The agency itself says “multiple use” does not mean every use belongs on every acre.

And the legal machinery is already being tested. BLM approved an 88.5-acre Townsite Data Center project near Boulder City, Nevada, in June, explicitly connecting the project to Trump’s data-center executive order. The Washington Sun reports that project was subsequently halted by a judge amid a dispute over its environmental review. Other projects are being explored in Nevada, while the National Park Service is considering a land swap involving 36 federally owned acres at Virginia’s Prince William Forest Park. The larger fight is therefore about more than AI: it’s about what qualifies as an appropriate private use of federally managed land, what environmental scrutiny applies, and whether the government’s push for AI infrastructure can coexist with BLM’s obligation to balance competing public uses.

Trump’s Canada Tariffs Put a 60-Year Auto Supply Chain in the Crosshairs

The escalating U.S.-Canada trade fight is colliding with an auto industry built around parts crossing the border repeatedly before a finished vehicle ever reaches a dealership. Canada imposed new counter-tariffs of 15%, 25% and 50% on $27.6 billion worth of U.S. imports beginning Sept. 8, while existing Canadian auto tariffs remain in effect. Against that backdrop, President Trump has threatened additional tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel beginning Jan. 1.

You can put a tariff on the border overnight. You cannot rebuild a continental automobile supply chain by Tuesday.

That’s because there really isn’t a neatly divided “American” and “Canadian” auto industry anymore. Integration dates to the 1965 Auto Pact, deepened under NAFTA and continued under the USMCA, which requires qualifying vehicles to meet North American content rules. A component can begin in Mexico, get machined in the United States, receive additional work in Canada and return to an American assembly plant. Jim Jarrell, CEO of Canadian supplier Linamar, gave NPR the appropriate culinary description: “I’ve often described it like an omelet.” Once you’ve scrambled the eggs, separating them again gets expensive.

And tariffs can hit long before the finished car reaches the lot. Automobiles contain thousands of components and huge quantities of steel and aluminum. A supplier may buy tariff-affected metal, turn it into a component and send that component across the border for another stage of production. Smaller Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers can be especially exposed because they have less ability to absorb sudden cost increases or relocate production. Canada has now raised counter-tariffs on numerous U.S. steel products to 50%, while its existing 25% auto countermeasures continue to apply to specified U.S.-origin vehicles and content.

The alternative—moving factories and rebuilding supply chains—is neither quick nor cheap. Auto plants, tooling, supplier contracts and logistics networks represent years of investment. Companies therefore face an uncomfortable choice: absorb tariff costs, pass some of them to customers, shift sourcing, postpone investments or spend heavily reorganizing production without knowing how long the tariff regime will last. “The challenge is that the automotive industry does not move at the speed of politics,” Cox Automotive’s Sean Tucker told NPR. Canada’s response illustrates how quickly the cycle can escalate: Ottawa says its latest tariffs match U.S. measures dollar for dollar and has simultaneously announced $7.5 billion in additional support for Canadian workers and businesses affected by the dispute.

That’s what makes this bigger than another tariff argument. For more than 60 years, automakers deliberately constructed North America as one manufacturing platform. Disentangling it could shift jobs and investment among the U.S., Canada and Mexico, but it also risks raising production costs while North American manufacturers face increasingly intense global competition. Tariffs may change where companies eventually build things. Until factories and supply chains catch up, however, they can also make the things already being built more expensive.

Vice President JD Vance has suggested tariff revenue could finance the payments, describing them as a dividend for American workers. But Congress controls federal spending, and Trump did not explain whether he would seek congressional authorization. Democrats called the proposal an “empty promise,” while legal experts are debating whether tying a massive financial benefit to an election outcome creates legal problems. It should. Duh.

Trump has floated tariff-funded checks before, including $2,000 payments, but this version arrives less than two months before the November 3 midterms with control of Congress at stake. Former Republican strategist Robert Moran supplied perhaps the cleanest assessment: “It is an extraordinary promise, and I’m not sure where that money is going to come from—but it is campaign season.” Translation: The checks aren’t in the mail yet, but the campaign pitch certainly is.

Air Force One’s Emergency Slide Accidentally Deploys, Delaying Trump’s Dallas Trip

President Donald Trump’s flight to Dallas was briefly delayed Wednesday after a military aide accidentally triggered an emergency evacuation slide on the new Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews. The president described the episode as officials “checking the slide,” while multiple reports citing people familiar with the incident said the deployment was accidental.

Nothing livens up a presidential departure quite like accidentally turning a Boeing 747 into the world’s largest bounce house.

Trump remained aboard Marine One for roughly 20 minutes while personnel dealt with the deployed slide. When reporters asked what was happening, Trump said, “They want to make sure everything works perfectly.” Asked whether he was confident the aircraft was safe, he replied, “Yeah, I am, or I wouldn’t be on it.” The slide was ultimately removed and Air Force One departed for Dallas.

The aircraft is the Boeing 747-8 donated by Qatar and subsequently refurbished for presidential use. The incident drew extra attention because the jet has already faced questions about its security capabilities compared with the older presidential aircraft. Trump began flying aboard it in July, and Reuters reports that it is expected to undergo additional security upgrades.

The slide itself wasn’t simply something somebody could stuff back behind a panel and call it good. Emergency evacuation systems require specialized handling after deployment, and crews ultimately removed this one before the aircraft departed. The older presidential aircraft was brought nearby as a backup while crews worked on the problem, but Trump ultimately flew to Dallas aboard the new jet.

Trump Envoy Steve Witkoff Reported $107 Million From Entity Tied to Trump Crypto

President Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff reported $107 million in 2025 income from a holding company that owned his stake in World Liberty Financial, more than triple the $34 million he reported from the same entity previously. The latest disclosure included nearly $69 million in cash and $38 million in crypto, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The money is eye-catching; the overlap between private business and public diplomacy is what makes the story consequential.

Witkoff co-founded World Liberty Financial with Trump and members of both families in 2024. His son Zach is the company’s CEO, while Trump’s sons are also involved. Witkoff reported more than $400 million in assets and more than $250 million in total 2025 income, including $120 million from selling a stake in his real-estate company. The disclosures use value ranges for some assets, meaning they don’t provide a precise picture of his overall wealth.

The international connections add another layer. The Journal previously reported that UAE national security adviser Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan backed a $500 million investment for a 49% stake in World Liberty, with at least $31 million going to Witkoff-family-affiliated entities. Witkoff, meanwhile, has met with Tahnoon in his official capacity while working on U.S. diplomacy involving conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. The disclosure does not specify how much of Witkoff’s $107 million came from World Liberty versus other assets held by the same entity.

The White House says Witkoff’s business dealings and diplomatic work are separate. Sure, they are.

Spokeswoman Anna Kelly said his “prior commercial activities are completely unrelated to his efforts to end global conflicts on the President’s behalf.” ABC News reports that the White House says Witkoff has now fully divested from World Liberty Financial. Sure, he did.

Editor: When a government financial disclosure requires $107 million, crypto, real estate, foreign investors, and international diplomacy to fit on the same page, the footnotes deserve some attention.

Missouri’s Congressional Map Fight Lands Back at Supreme Court as Election Deadlines Loom

Missouri’s congressional map battle is back before the U.S. Supreme Court after state and federal courts issued conflicting orders over whether voters should use the state’s 2022 districts or a Republican-drawn 2025 map in the November 3 midterms. Election officials now face rapidly approaching ballot deadlines while the fundamental question of which districts exist remains unresolved.

Missouri knows when Election Day is. At the moment, it’s less certain what congressional map Election Day will actually use.

The fight centers on a 2025 map adopted by Missouri’s Republican-controlled legislature that could improve Republicans’ chances of winning seven of the state’s eight House seats, including by reshaping the Kansas City-area district represented by Democrat Emanuel Cleaver. The Missouri Supreme Court unanimously ruled September 3 that the new map could not take effect unless voters approved it in a referendum, after the group People Not Politicians gathered signatures challenging the redistricting plan.

Then things got complicated. Justice Brett Kavanaugh declined Missouri officials’ emergency request to suspend the state Supreme Court ruling. Less than half an hour later, federal Judge Stephen Clark issued an order requiring Missouri to use the new 2025 map because it had already been used in the August primaries. The 8th Circuit subsequently declined to block Clark’s order, sending People Not Politicians racing back to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The practical consequences are no abstraction. Boone County Clerk Brianna Lennon told The Washington Post that about 40 percent of her county’s voters are directly affected by which map wins.

Meanwhile, the Missouri Supreme Court has ordered Secretary of State Denny Hoskins to appear in a contempt proceeding over his decision to proceed with the new map despite the state court’s order.

Editor: When election officials have to program two congressional maps and wait for the courts to tell them which reality applies, “administrative complexity” has officially become an understatement.

Bangladesh’s Measles Crisis Nears 1,000 Deaths as Hospitals Overflow

Bangladesh has recorded 999 suspected and confirmed measles-related deaths since March, along with more than 166,000 suspected cases, as the country confronts its worst measles outbreak on record. More than 146,000 suspected patients have been hospitalized, and the measles surge is colliding with a dengue outbreak that is pushing an already strained healthcare system even harder.

A disease preventable with two vaccine doses is once again filling hospital wards with desperately sick children.

Health experts point to vaccination gaps created during political upheaval in 2024 and 2025, when routine immunization was disrupted, vaccine supplies became unreliable, and a nationwide measles-rubella campaign was canceled. Bangladesh had previously maintained vaccination coverage around or above the 95% level recommended by the World Health Organization for much of the previous decade. Epidemiologist Mahmudur Rahman put it plainly: “Bangladesh missed its measles elimination target because of vaccination gaps in 2024 and 2025.”

The numbers inside hospitals are grim. Dhaka’s Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital was designed for 1,350 patients but is caring for more than 2,350, with some measles patients being treated on the floor. At the same time, more than 45,000 people have been hospitalized with dengue this year. Bangladesh launched an emergency measles-rubella campaign targeting roughly 18 million young children and says more than 19.7 million have now been vaccinated, but experts say catch-up campaigns and stronger routine immunization remain essential.

Behind those statistics are parents bouncing between overcrowded hospitals looking for beds and treatment. Nasima Begum said her 13-month-old son missed his vaccination while sick and later couldn’t receive it because the vaccine wasn’t available. Her plea cuts through every bureaucratic explanation for what went wrong: “I don’t want any other mother to see her child suffer or die from this disease.” When a country gets this close to eliminating measles and then watches it roar back, the lesson is painfully uncomplicated: Vaccination gaps don’t stay gaps for long.

Editor: Measles doesn’t care about political turmoil, procurement changes, or bureaucratic explanations. Give it an opening in vaccination coverage and it will happily write the consequences in hospital admissions.

Jimmy Kimmel says he will release his interview with Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico on YouTube instead of broadcasting it on ABC, citing concerns about FCC scrutiny and the potential consequences for ABC affiliates. The FCC disputes that characterization, saying the accelerated reviews relate to an investigation into alleged unlawful employment discrimination and asking a judge to dismiss Disney’s lawsuit.

Kimmel told viewers that anyone wanting to watch the Talarico interview would have to find it on the show’s YouTube channel, calling that “the best that we can do until November.” The FCC maintains broadcasters remain subject to federal requirements that don’t apply in the same way to platforms such as YouTube. Whatever the courts ultimately decide, one practical consequence is already visible: At least one candidate interview that could have aired on broadcast television won’t.

9/11 Toxic Air Records Released: NYC Knew the Danger While Telling New Yorkers They Were Safe

Just days before the 25th anniversary of 9/11, New York City released 170,000 pages of records revealing officials were privately discussing toxic exposure, asbestos, and potential lawsuits while residents and workers were being reassured about the air around Ground Zero.

For thousands of first responders, workers, and Lower Manhattan residents who later became sick, these documents put some very ugly government conversations in black and white. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the records provide “accountability around city government’s response to September 11 that New Yorkers have been denied for years.”

Among the documents is the October 2001 “Harding Memo,” which warned then-Deputy Mayor Robert Harding that New York City could face as many as 10,000 lawsuits involving “toxic exposure” and faulty safety equipment. Another 2002 memo acknowledged “at least a low level of asbestos in the dust in many buildings in lower Manhattan” while discussing criticism that potentially damaging asbestos findings had been suppressed. Former Giuliani adviser Ester Fuchs even wrote, “At the least, we should discontinue telling people to clean their apartments with wet mops and rags.” That is one hell of a sentence to discover 25 years later.

The records were released following years of litigation by 9/11 Health Watch and other advocates seeking information about what officials knew after the attacks. Mamdani says additional disclosures could eventually total millions of pages.

The human toll makes the paper trail far more than an exercise in historical accountability. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the September 11 attacks, and thousands more have since died from related illnesses; the World Trade Center Health Program puts the number of subsequent deaths cited in the report at roughly 4,343, while the CDC estimates about 400,000 people were exposed to toxic contaminants, dangerous conditions, or risks of physical injury. Mamdani called releasing the documents “the right thing to do,” and Stewart stressed that the fight isn’t finished: “There’s more work to be done.” Twenty-five years later, “never forget” apparently also requires making damn sure the government doesn’t get to forget what it knew.

Editor: Officials were apparently preparing for the possibility of 10,000 lawsuits while New Yorkers were preparing to go back to work. Amazing how quickly government can recognize danger when the endangered party is its own legal department.

Netanyahu Was Warned About Hamas Attack 10 Days Before Oct. 7

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was personally warned by UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed that Hamas was planning a major operation just 10 days before the Oct. 7, 2023 attack, according to a Haaretz report cited by the Associated Press.

If the account is accurate, it adds a potentially significant new piece to the still-unresolved question of what Israel’s leadership knew before Hamas breached the border, killed about 1,200 people, and took 251 hostages. Haaretz reported that bin Zayed warned Netanyahu that then-Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was planning an operation that could cause bloodshed, destabilize the region, and threaten the Abraham Accords. Netanyahu reportedly “reacted with relative calm,” saying Israel was prepared and that an attack was considered more likely to come from the West Bank.

Netanyahu’s office flatly rejected the story, calling it an “absolute lie” and saying he did not speak with the UAE president during the period in question or receive such a warning. The UAE Foreign Ministry declined to comment on “speculation regarding conversations between government leaders,” while noting that the countries have maintained direct communication and that relevant intelligence is shared when necessary. So we have a published account of a direct warning, an unequivocal denial from Netanyahu, and no confirmation from the UAE.

The allegation arrives as Israel heads toward national elections next month, with responsibility for the failures surrounding Oct. 7 already a central campaign issue. Former military chief Gadi Eisenkot accused Netanyahu of ignoring numerous warnings and declared, “He is unfit.”

Netanyahu, meanwhile, has resisted calls for an official government inquiry into the events surrounding the attack.

I wonder why…

Nearly three years after Oct. 7, the dispute over advance warnings remains politically consequential and factually contested. Netanyahu’s government says this particular warning never occurred; Haaretz reports that it came directly from one of Israel’s most important Arab partners. Establishing which account is correct would matter enormously—not merely for the election campaign, but for understanding how Israel suffered one of the worst security failures in its history.

Editor: A warning this serious deserves something better than competing political statements. The public needs the evidence establishing whether the conversation happened, what was said, and what officials did with the information afterward.

Trump Escalates Canada Trade War with Sweeping Import Bans

The Trump administration says the United States will ban imports of several Canadian products—including some alcohol, motorcycles, dairy products, and molasses—beginning Sept. 29, marking a significant escalation in the trade fight between the two longtime allies.

This isn’t another tariff hike: Washington is preparing to tell selected Canadian products they simply can’t come in. A senior administration official told The Washington Post that the bans would affect Canadian imports worth “single-digit billions” of dollars. That’s relatively small compared with total U.S.-Canada trade, but Villanova international business professor Jonathan Doh called the move “extraordinarily unusual, and especially for what had been a very close ally and trading partner.”

The bans come after the trade relationship spent more than a year deteriorating. A U.S.-Canada agreement collapsed last month, leading to 50% tariffs on some Canadian goods, including certain milk, toys, and alcohol. Canada retaliated with tariffs on American steel and aluminum, dairy products, appliances, agricultural equipment, plastics, and electronics. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has pledged to match U.S. tariffs “dollar for dollar” while pushing Canada to diversify its trading relationships.

The administration says the new bans are retaliation for Canadian restrictions on American products. After Trump repeatedly threatened to make Canada the 51st state and renamed Lake Ontario “Lake America,” several Canadian provinces restricted or banned sales of U.S. alcohol. Trump’s proclamation accused Canada of “discriminating in fact against the commerce of the United States by banning the purchase, distribution, or retailing of U.S. alcoholic beverages.” U.S. officials say Section 338 of the Tariff Act provides authority to impose the bans when another country fails to end discriminatory treatment.

Meanwhile, the administration is also reshuffling which Canadian products face its 50% tariffs, removing some goods such as cement while adding others, including certain cheeses. The politics aren’t exactly giving Washington an easy runway: A Reuters/Ipsos poll cited by The Post found only 20% of Americans support new tariffs on Canadian imports. What began as a tariff dispute between two deeply integrated economies has now reached the point where Washington is preparing actual product bans—and Ottawa has already demonstrated that retaliation is very much on the menu.

Editor: The U.S. and Canada spent decades building one of the world’s closest trading relationships. Now we’re banning each other’s booze. Somewhere, a trade economist is staring silently into a glass of Canadian whisky while it’s still legal to import.

Oil Tops $100 as Middle East Attacks Send Gas and Diesel Prices Soaring

Brent crude surged past $100 a barrel Wednesday for the first time since July after attacks on oil tankers and facilities threatened an already battered Middle East energy supply chain, while U.S. gasoline jumped to an average $4.22 a gallon.

This is no longer just an oil-market story—the damage is showing up at gas stations, in airline fares and throughout the cost of moving practically everything. Brent climbed nearly 3% to $100.72 a barrel, while U.S. benchmark crude rose 2.4% to $95.25. Regular gasoline jumped 7 cents overnight to $4.22 a gallon, more than a dollar higher than a year ago, according to AAA. Diesel reached $5.94 after hitting an all-time high last week, and soaring jet-fuel costs have prompted airlines to cut flights while increasing fares and fees.

The latest surge followed another escalation in the conflict. The U.S. military said it struck five Iranian oil tankers after attempted missile attacks on a Navy warship, while Iranian-backed Houthi attacks ignited fires at Saudi oil facilities. The broader war has already halted most shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the critical waterway that carried about one-fifth of the world’s oil supply before the fighting began. Recent Houthi attacks also threaten an alternative shipping route Saudi Arabia has relied upon during the conflict.

And $100 oil may not be the ceiling. Bank of America analysts raised their second-half forecast to $83 a barrel (from $76) because of persistent disruptions around Hormuz, while warning that continued restrictions on shipping could push crude into a $95-to-$120 range. Damage to major energy infrastructure could produce temporary spikes as high as $150.

Consumers are already getting the bill. Higher energy prices ripple through trucking, manufacturing, aviation, agriculture, and virtually every supply chain that ultimately ends at somebody’s wallet.

Trump Gave White House Aides $45,000 Cash Gifts—Now(!) Ethics Experts Are Raising Questions

President Donald Trump gave $45,000 cash gifts to executive assistant Natalie Harp, communications adviser Margo Martin, and executive assistant Chamberlain Harris, according to financial disclosures, with each payment amounting to nearly one-third of the aides’ $150,000 annual White House salaries. The three women listed the payments as “Cash Gift for Holidays.” Trump also gave $20,000 to Walt Nauta, director of Oval Office operations. He’s the guy who carried around illegally-kept top secret documents at Mar-a-lago.

The amounts are unusual enough that government ethics experts are debating whether the gifts could run afoul of federal restrictions on supplementing government salaries. Richard Painter, who served as chief White House ethics lawyer under President George W. Bush and is a Trump critic, told The Washington Post that the payments appear to violate federal law prohibiting outside supplementation of federal employees’ salaries. His assessment was succinct: “You can’t do that.”

The White House disputes that interpretation. Spokesperson Davis Ingle said Trump has a longstanding practice of giving Christmas gifts to employees and others around him and maintained that these payments were unrelated to the recipients’ government work, making them permissible under applicable legal and ethical rules. Former acting Office of Government Ethics director Don Fox offered a more cautious assessment, saying the available facts don’t clearly establish a violation. He noted that large payments from a superior to a subordinate weren’t something OGE had really contemplated because, as he put it, “This just doesn’t happen.”

The recipients are members of Trump’s longtime inner circle. Harp, sometimes called the “human printer” because she supplies Trump with hard copies of news and social-media posts, has worked for him since 2022. Martin first joined Trump’s White House in 2019 and now documents presidential activities for social media. Harris also worked in Trump’s first administration and was appointed by Trump this year to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts. Nauta served as Trump’s valet during his first administration and later became a co-defendant in the classified-documents case; those charges were dismissed in 2024.

Whether the payments violate federal law remains disputed rather than established. Fox nevertheless told The Post that such unusually large gifts could raise concerns about employees feeling indebted to the person who gave them the money. The Post reported that ethics experts were unaware of comparable cash payments of this scale from previous presidents to subordinate White House employees. That’s the central issue now: Not whether the disclosed gifts happened, but whether a president personally handing employees tens of thousands of dollars is legally just another holiday present—or something federal ethics rules weren’t designed to see under the Christmas tree.

Editor: The legal question is unresolved, but $45,000 is one heck of a stocking stuffer. At that point, forget the fruitcake—you may need to attach an ethics opinion to the bow. And—was that Trump’s cash or the American taxpayers’?

DHS Predictive Policing Teams Are Analyzing Americans’ Financial Activity to Target Traffic Stops

Secretive U.S. Border Patrol units called Predictive Intelligence Targeting Teams, or PITT, are analyzing Americans’ financial activity and other law-enforcement data, then passing potential targets to local police for traffic stops, according to an investigation by 404 Media. The outlet identified PITT operations in Border Patrol’s Spokane Sector in Washington and Laredo Sector in Texas, although Customs and Border Protection declined to say how many such teams exist nationwide.

The people identified by these teams don’t necessarily need to be suspected of a particular crime before the machinery starts turning. In one Montana case, Border Patrol analyst Matthew Phelps reportedly reviewed “law enforcement-sensitive databases” and identified “financial activity patterns commonly associated with illicit narcotics activity” connected to driver Kyle William Olson. Phelps then sent intelligence to Montana Highway Patrol Sergeant James Beck, who stopped Olson because his license plate was partially obstructed. Police ultimately charged Olson with DUI and, later, possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

The troubling question is what happens behind that seemingly ordinary traffic stop. Beck’s report acknowledged that Phelps had identified Olson’s vehicle as having “indicators of possible narcotics trafficking,” while the Border Patrol document said the intelligence wasn’t the “sole basis” for stopping him.

Exactly what financial information Border Patrol accesses—and whether warrants are involved—remains unclear. CBP declined to identify the financial data, analytical methods, or targeting criteria involved, telling 404 Media that Border Patrol uses “intelligence-informed analysis and planning” consistent with applicable laws, privacy protections, and oversight requirements. The investigation follows earlier reporting by the Associated Press that Border Patrol’s broader predictive-policing operation also uses automatic license-plate readers to monitor vehicles. In another cited case, police stopped Alek Schott in Texas, searched his vehicle, and found nothing.

CBP says revealing specific techniques could compromise investigations and agent safety. Civil-liberties advocates argue that secrecy makes meaningful oversight difficult, particularly when financial records, location tracking, and routine traffic violations can intersect to produce police encounters. Therein lies the uncomfortable question: If the government can analyze your movements and financial behavior, privately flag you as interesting, then wait for police to find an ordinary reason to pull you over, how meaningful is the distinction between investigating a suspect and searching for one?

Editor: A busted taillight used to mean you had a busted taillight. When secret federal analysis is sitting invisibly behind the traffic stop, “Do you know why I pulled you over?” becomes a considerably more complicated question.

There’s a detail buried inside Donald Trump’s Venezuela strategy that deserves more attention than it’s getting. It’s not just the oil. It’s the bank account.

More specifically, the U.S. has built a system in which certain payments generated by Venezuela’s oil and other natural resources are routed into accounts controlled or administered by Washington before the Venezuelan government gets access to the money. That sounds like a technical wrinkle, but it may be one of the most consequential parts of the whole arrangement.

The public debate tends to focus on whether the United States is “taking Venezuela’s oil.” That framing is dramatic, but it misses the more interesting question: who controls the cash register?

Right now, Washington has an extraordinary amount of control over it.

So what exactly happened?

Back in January, the Trump administration announced that revenue from Venezuelan oil sales would be placed in U.S.-controlled bank accounts. Reuters reported on January 7 that the Department of Energy said proceeds from Venezuelan crude sales would be deposited in accounts controlled by the United States at major international banks.

Two days later, Trump signed Executive Order 14373, creating the legal framework around something called the Foreign Government Deposit Funds, or FGDF. The name is bureaucratic enough to put a room to sleep, but the structure behind it is anything but boring.

The executive order defines the funds broadly. They can include money held by the United States on Venezuela’s behalf that comes from the sale of Venezuelan natural resources, not merely petroleum, as well as money connected to diluents sold to Venezuela.

That distinction matters. This is not necessarily just an oil account. It can function more like a resource-revenue account, potentially touching oil, gas, minerals and other natural-resource proceeds.

Whose money is it?

Here’s where the arrangement gets unusual.

Legally, according to Trump’s own executive order, the money does not belong to the United States. It remains sovereign property of Venezuela. The U.S. government says it is holding those funds in a custodial capacity and explicitly states that the money is Venezuelan property, not American property.

But ownership is only half the story.

Treasury holds the money, the Secretary of State plays a central role in determining authorized disbursements, and the funds cannot simply be moved around as though Caracas had unrestricted access to an ordinary bank account. So while the money is legally Venezuelan, Venezuela does not necessarily have unfettered control over it.

That is a pretty important footnote.

This isn’t just some theoretical legal structure

Treasury has since turned the arrangement into an actual payment mechanism.

OFAC, the Treasury office that runs U.S. sanctions programs, tells companies that certain payments owed to Venezuela or state oil company PdVSA must go into the Foreign Government Deposit Funds rather than directly to the Venezuelan government. Depending on the transaction, that can include royalties, per-barrel levies and other payments.

And if a company needs to make one of those deposits, it doesn’t simply wire the money to Caracas and call it a day. It may have to provide the U.S. government with transaction information, contracts, invoices, payment amounts, license details and other documentation before receiving account instructions.

That is more than simple oversight. It is a financial checkpoint.

Why would Trump want this?

There are several reasons.

The first is creditors. Venezuela and PdVSA have spent years being sued by bondholders, companies and other creditors trying to recover unpaid debts. If billions of dollars suddenly start landing in ordinary commercial accounts, those creditors may try to seize the funds.

Trump’s executive order specifically protects the Foreign Government Deposit Funds from attachment, garnishment, liens and similar legal processes. In practical terms, that creates a kind of shield around the money.

The second reason is leverage. If Washington controls the gateway through which a meaningful share of Venezuela’s resource revenue travels, it gains significant influence over the Venezuelan government. You do not need to own every barrel if you have substantial control over the financial plumbing around the barrel.

The third reason is geopolitical. The administration has framed Venezuela as part of a larger contest over Iranian, Russian and Chinese influence in the Western Hemisphere. That strategy also appears to be expanding beyond petroleum, with growing U.S. interest in Venezuelan gold, minerals and other strategic resources.

So the resource story is getting broader, not narrower.

Then came the really big oil deal

At the end of August, Trump announced another major Venezuelan oil arrangement involving North American Blue Energy Partners, or NABEP.

The deal gives the company long-term rights connected to 17 Venezuelan oil fields containing an estimated 65 billion barrels of reserves. The U.S. government, meanwhile, secured a 35% stake in the venture and preferential access to some of its production.

The reported term is 100 years.

That is less an oil contract than a multigenerational relationship.

The White House describes the arrangement as a historic energy deal. Critics see it as something much closer to state-directed resource extraction. Both descriptions help explain why the agreement has generated so much attention.

But even here, the financial-control question may be more important than the physical oil itself.

Follow the money, not the barrel

The political argument is usually framed around whether America is taking Venezuelan oil. A better question is how much control the United States now exercises over Venezuela’s resource economy.

There are several layers operating at once. U.S. sanctions determine which companies can participate. U.S. licenses determine which transactions are legal. Certain payments to Venezuela can be routed through Treasury-controlled accounts. The U.S. government has influence over the release of money held in those accounts. And Washington now has a direct financial interest in one of the largest new Venezuelan oil ventures.

Taken together, that adds up to a remarkable degree of economic influence over another country’s principal source of national wealth.

Is the U.S. stealing Venezuela’s money?

Not according to the legal structure.

The executive order goes out of its way to say that the funds remain Venezuelan sovereign property. Treasury is supposed to hold the money in custody, and the funds are not simply absorbed into the U.S. federal budget.

That distinction matters. But another distinction matters just as much: ownership and control are not the same thing.

A country can legally own money while another government has enormous influence over when, where and how that money is released. That does not make the arrangement theft, but it does make it an unusually intrusive form of financial control.

There is a legitimate argument for doing it

The case for this system is not absurd.

Venezuela’s oil sector has been battered by corruption, sanctions, collapsing infrastructure, debt disputes and years of disastrous management. Putting revenue into protected accounts could make it harder for officials to siphon it off, prevent creditors from immediately grabbing the proceeds, and give Western companies a clearer legal framework for doing business.

If the money is genuinely used for Venezuelan reconstruction, public services and economic stabilization, supporters can argue that the arrangement is preferable to watching another resource windfall disappear into corruption or legal chaos.

That is the strongest argument for the system.

But there’s a very large “however”

The obvious problem is transparency.

We know quite a bit about how the mechanism is supposed to work. What is much harder to find is a simple, continuously updated public ledger showing how much money has entered the accounts, who deposited it, how much has been released, who received the funds, what they were used for and who authorized the disbursements.

That is the missing piece.

Once a foreign government effectively says, “We’ll hold your country’s oil money and help determine when it gets released,” the standard for transparency should be extremely high.

There should be receipts. Lots of them.

The bottom line

Trump’s Venezuela policy is much more sophisticated, and much more aggressive, than simply buying Venezuelan crude.

The United States has helped construct a financial architecture around Venezuela’s natural-resource economy. The oil may still legally belong to Venezuela. The money may still legally belong to Venezuela. But Washington controls critical parts of the pipeline connecting one to the other.

That gives the United States leverage over Venezuela without formally nationalizing anything.

Depending on your point of view, that can be seen as a clever mechanism for protecting Venezuelan wealth and stabilizing a battered economy, or as a breathtaking intrusion into another nation’s sovereignty.

The annoying answer is that it may be some of both.

And if this system keeps expanding from petroleum into gold, minerals and other natural resources, the bank account may ultimately matter more than the oil deal itself.

Canada is imposing new retaliatory tariffs of 15%, 25%, and 50% on $27.6 billion worth of U.S. imports beginning September 8, matching the latest American tariffs rate-for-rate. The targets range from steel and dairy products to appliances, clothing, and sporting goods, escalating a trade fight that is reaching deeper into everyday commerce.

The tariff war is no longer hovering over factories and trade negotiations—it’s landing directly on products consumers buy.

American milk, certain steel and aluminum products, clothing, and sporting goods including golf equipment face tariffs as high as 50%. Cheese and some appliances are among products facing 25% levies, while other goods will be taxed at 15%. Existing Canadian counter-tariffs on U.S. automobiles will remain in effect.

The Canadian government says the measures are designed to match U.S. tariffs “dollar for dollar, rate for rate.” They follow Washington’s decision to impose a 50% tariff on $27.6 billion of Canadian goods effective August 22. Ottawa says its retaliation is concentrated in sectors particularly affected by U.S. tariffs, including steel and aluminum, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, plastics, and electronics.

The political logic of retaliation may be straightforward, but the economic bill can be considerably messier: Tariffs collected at the border can translate into higher costs for importers and, of course, consumers. Canada does maintain a remission process for exceptional circumstances, including cases where necessary goods cannot reasonably be sourced domestically or outside the United States.

Iran-backed Houthi rebels launched a wave of missile and drone attacks across southern Saudi Arabia Tuesday, wounding 73 people and setting fires at oil facilities and utilities. The strikes mark a major escalation between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, threatening to reignite a conflict in Yemen that had largely cooled since a 2022 truce.

And this time, the battlefield sits uncomfortably close to an increasingly important route for getting oil to the rest of the world.

Saudi officials said the attacks struck civilian and economic facilities in Abha, Jazan, Najran, and Khamis Mushait. Saudi Arabia’s Energy Ministry said fires broke out at several oil facilities and utilities, forcing temporary shutdowns. The region includes the 400,000-barrel-per-day Jazan refinery, one of the kingdom’s largest. The Houthis claimed they fired dozens of ballistic missiles and drones at oil and economic targets as well as King Khalid Air Base.

The escalation comes as pressure is already mounting on global oil supplies and shipping routes. The Houthis have targeted shipping in and around the Red Sea, while Saudi Arabia has relied on routes connected to the Bab el-Mandeb as an alternative avenue for moving oil while traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has been constrained. Saudi coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki al-Malki called Tuesday’s attacks a “serious escalation” and vowed retaliation. Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree offered his own warning: “Every aggression against our country and people will be met with a firm response.”

The renewed fighting is also reopening wounds from Yemen’s devastating civil war, which has killed at least 150,000 people according to U.N. estimates. Recent clashes have already displaced about 18,500 people in Taiz and Hodeida. International Organization for Migration official Abdusattor Esoev described the human cost plainly: “Families are arriving with nothing: no shelter, no food, no way to know if it’s safe to go back.”

U.S. Southern Command says it intercepted and sank an Ecuadorian vessel allegedly serving as a floating refueling station for drug trafficking operations in the eastern Pacific. The people aboard were removed before the vessel was destroyed and are expected to be transferred to Ecuadorian authorities.

Five vessels targeted in less than two weeks makes this considerably more than an occasional interdiction.

Southern Command says the vessels were linked to Los Choneros, an Ecuadorian criminal organization the U.S. has designated a foreign terrorist organization. Video released with the latest announcement showed military personnel boarding the vessel, a helicopter overhead, and then a projectile striking and sinking the boat. Ecuadorian authorities had not immediately commented on the latest operation.

The broader campaign has drawn scrutiny over its legality and effectiveness. According to AP, at least 227 people have been killed in 68 U.S. government strikes against boats in the Caribbean and Pacific since the operations began more than a year ago. In at least one previous case, Ecuadorian authorities said they had no evidence that a survivor had participated in criminal activity.

The operations are also moving beyond the water. The Trump administration has pursued agreements with Latin American governments for joint operations against criminal groups on land. AP reports that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Colombia, Guatemala, and Honduras had agreed to such operations, although Guatemala denied reaching such an agreement; Ecuador began similar missions with the U.S. in March.

U.S. consumers have paid an estimated $100 billion (and counting, by the millisecond) in additional energy costs since the Iran war began February 28, according to Brown University’s real-time energy cost tracker. Axios reports that the meter was adding roughly another $1 million every two minutes as of Monday morning, with the average American household paying more than $760 in additional fuel costs.

That’s $100 billion disappearing through gas pumps and diesel tanks—and the tab is still running.

Brown University’s Climate Solutions Lab calculates the burden by comparing actual gasoline and diesel prices with an estimate of what prices would have been without the war. Back in May, the tracker had already crossed $40 billion, or more than $300 per household. Less than four months later, according to Axios, that figure had climbed to $100 billion.

Diesel may be the bigger economic headache from here. Higher diesel prices don’t stay neatly parked at truck stops—they can feed into freight and transportation costs, which can then affect prices across the economy. Axios reports Texas alone has absorbed about $11 billion of the estimated additional energy costs.

Brown’s researchers have emphasized from the beginning that higher fuel prices represent an economic cost separate from direct military spending. Their May report estimated Pentagon expenditures on the conflict at roughly $29 billion at that point, while fuel costs borne by consumers had already exceeded $40 billion. Now the consumer energy bill has blown through $100 billion, turning the economic consequences of the war into something Americans can watch climb every time they fill the tank.

This is so important to understand: Direct war costs, while high, are nothing like the “tax” Trump has stupidly foisted on the American consumer, dwarfing was costs by 3 to 1.

The U.S. has only about 4 million affordable rentals available for 11 million extremely low-income renter households, yet cities including Austin, Denver, and Portland have significant numbers of vacant affordable units aimed at people higher up the income ladder. The disconnect is painfully simple: Much of the housing being subsidized as “affordable” still isn’t affordable to the people who need help most.

We have an affordable-housing shortage and empty affordable apartments at the same time. That takes some doing.

About three-quarters of extremely low-income renter households spend more than half their income on rent and utilities. Yet only about 12% of affordable units financed in 2024 through the federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credit were reserved for these renters. Most were aimed at households earning at least 50% of their area’s median income. As developer Carmen Romero put it: “The math does not lie.” Without substantially more subsidies, she said, developers often can’t make apartments for the lowest-income renters financially workable.

Then there’s the other end of this housing pretzel. Austin has more than 4,500 vacant affordable units, for a vacancy rate approaching 16%. Denver reports a 13% vacancy rate among tax-credit units targeting renters at 60% of area median income and 21% for those at 80%. Portland has more than 1,700 vacant affordable units. In some cases, subsidized rents are getting close enough to market rents that prospective tenants would rather pay a little more and skip the paperwork Olympics required to qualify.

Austin provides perhaps the clearest illustration. The city set a goal of producing 20,000 units for extremely low-income households between 2018 and 2027. As of 2024, it had built just 543. Meanwhile, all 15,000 planned units for households earning 60% to 80% of area median income had been built. For Mathew Davis, who lives in an Austin homeless shelter and previously spent a year living in his car, the objective is considerably less complicated than the financing formulas: “I want to shut the door at night and be able to sleep. I really just want to find the right place.”

Republicans are gathering at Dallas’ American Airlines Center Wednesday and Thursday for the party’s first national midterm convention, bringing an estimated 20,000 attendees and extensive security restrictions to the surrounding downtown area. The security footprint may be the part Dallas residents notice first. Barricades and checkpoints were already being installed Monday around the American Airlines Center, with screening areas positioned on multiple sides of the venue. Those restrictions are expected to remain through Friday, meaning people who live, work, or travel through the area should expect delays and controlled access.

The Republican National Committee is treating the gathering as a national showcase before the midterms. RNC Chairman Joe Gruters called it a “Trumpapalooza” when announcing the event, while the Texas GOP offered $10,000 packages that included tickets and “honorary delegate” credentials; a free ticket lottery was also offered. Whatever you call it, Dallas is about to find out what happens when the spectacle of a presidential convention gets dropped into the middle of midterm season.

Russia’s sabotage campaign across Europe is escalating in frequency and danger, raising the risk that one botched drone strike, warehouse fire, or rail attack could leave NATO confronting something far bigger than another round of sanctions.

So far, Vladimir Putin has been lucky: Nobody has been killed. NATO may not get that luxury forever.

German officials say Russia was behind a failed explosive-drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport, where one drone struck a parked Ukrainian cargo plane and another apparently collided with a departing aircraft—but neither exploded. The incident joins a growing list of alleged Russian operations across Europe, including plots involving incendiary devices aboard DHL cargo planes, railroad sabotage in Poland, and attacks targeting warehouses, shopping centers, defense companies, and infrastructure. Western officials say the tempo and intensity are increasing as Russia seeks ways to pressure the countries supplying Ukraine.

That leaves NATO wrestling with an ugly problem: Its collective-defense machinery was designed to deter armies crossing borders, not a murky campaign of drones, fires, and sabotage calibrated to remain below the threshold of open war.

Former U.S. ambassador to NATO Julianne Smith put the danger plainly: “At some point, it is going to go off the rails and somebody is going to get hurt and it’s going to present a different dilemma for the alliance.”

The question then becomes whether an attack killing NATO citizens triggers a meaningful collective response—or simply another carefully worded communiqué.

And that ambiguity may be exactly what Putin is testing. NATO officials continue to argue that Moscow understands the consequences of directly challenging Article 5, but Russia can learn plenty by repeatedly approaching the line without crossing it.

Estonia’s intelligence chief Kaupo Rosin framed the longer-term problem: “We have to ensure that six months, one year, or five years from now, Russia still has the same understanding that NATO deterrence works.”

Deterrence only works when the other guy believes you mean it—and Putin appears increasingly interested in checking the warranty.

The average U.S. diesel price reached a record $5.820 a gallon Thursday, surpassing the previous peak set after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 as conflicts involving Iran and Russia tighten global fuel supplies.

And because virtually everything Americans buy spends some time on a truck, this particular record has a nasty habit of showing up everywhere else.

Diesel has remained above $5 a gallon since July 15 and is up 55% since the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran began February 28, according to Reuters. The supply picture has also been hit by Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries, prompting Moscow to ban diesel exports through September 30. Before the Iran conflict, roughly 900,000 barrels of diesel per day moved through the Gulf—about 10% of global seaborne supply.

Now comes the seasonal squeeze. Farmers and truckers typically burn more diesel during the autumn harvest, while heating-oil demand increases heading into winter. Yet U.S. distillate inventories averaged their lowest August level for that time of year since 1982.

“We’re entering a key period for diesel consumption with the lowest inventories on record for early September,” TradeStation’s David Russell said. Higher transportation and production expenses can eventually work their way into grocery prices and other consumer goods.

The East Coast looks particularly vulnerable, with distillate inventories falling to a record-low 19.3 million barrels for the week ending August 28, based on government data going back to 1990. Refiners are running hard to cash in on unusually strong margins, but disruptions elsewhere continue constraining supply. In other words, America isn’t entering autumn with much of a fuel cushion—and geopolitical events aren’t exactly cooperating.

The Missouri Supreme Court unanimously blocked the state’s new Republican-backed congressional districts from being used in November, ruling that a voter referendum legally put the map on hold. The decision means Missouri will use its previous congressional boundaries for the 2026 general election unless and until voters approve the replacement map.

The August primaries were held under one congressional map, but November’s general election will be held under another.

The dispute began after Missouri’s Republican-led Legislature approved new districts following President Donald Trump’s push for mid-decade redistricting that could improve Republican prospects in the U.S. House. The biggest change targeted the Kansas City-based 5th Congressional District, represented by Democrat Emanuel Cleaver, by extending it into more Republican rural territory. Missouri currently sends six Republicans and two Democrats to the House.

Opponents submitted more than 300,000 petition signatures seeking a statewide referendum on the new map. Republican Secretary of State Denny Hoskins rejected the petition, arguing that Missouri’s referendum process could not be used for congressional redistricting.

The state Supreme Court disagreed, ruling: “The referendum petition was legal, sufficient, and timely, and the secretary incorrectly concluded otherwise.”

Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway said she would appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The ruling drops another complication into a national redistricting fight that has spread well beyond Missouri, with both parties pursuing congressional maps that could improve their chances of controlling the House. In Missouri, however, the immediate result is straightforward: The post-2020 census map remains in force for November while voters get their say on the replacement.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is extending some U.S. military deployments in the Middle East into 2027 as the six-month conflict with Iran drags on, leaving tens of thousands of American troops committed to a war originally presented as a short campaign.

Six months, 50,000 troops and 19 warships later, “quick and decisive” has officially misplaced the calendar.

The U.S. military presence includes two aircraft carriers, 13 guided-missile destroyers, fighter squadrons, air-defense units, and paratroopers. Some Army air-defense deployments have reportedly grown from nine months to 12, while elements of the 82nd Airborne Division could remain in the region well into 2027. CENTCOM separately confirmed this week that more than 50,000 U.S. service members are operating across the Middle East.

The extended commitment is taking a toll. Ship crews are spending longer stretches at sea, maintenance is piling up, and some units diverted from Europe and the Pacific have already been deployed for more than a year. The USS Gerald R. Ford completed an 11-month deployment, while analysts warn that maintaining this level of firepower around Iran inevitably means having fewer forces available elsewhere.

Former Navy official Bryan Clark summed it up: “They’re setting it up to be sustained over the long haul, meaning well into next year.”

Meanwhile, President Trump has privately discussed declaring the Iran war over while keeping military options available and betting that economic pressure will eventually force Tehran to change course, according to the Journal. Fighting clearly hasn’t disappeared: CENTCOM said U.S. forces struck Iranian Revolutionary Guard targets on September 1 after attempted attacks on commercial shipping and American service members. So Washington may be debating what to call this conflict, but 50,000 deployed Americans probably don’t need a vocabulary lesson.

Editor: Washington has a remarkable talent for discovering that the quickest way out of a Middle East war somehow requires another year of deployments.

President Donald Trump says he will seek repayment from European nations for U.S. military aid and munitions previously supplied to Ukraine, while signaling that Washington is temporarily prioritizing rebuilding its own weapons stockpiles over sales to allies.

After hundreds of billions in American support for Ukraine, Trump says Europe is about to get a very large—and very late—bill.

Trump tied the demand to concerns about U.S. weapons inventories after months of fighting with Iran. “We are taking them for ourselves, the USA, rather than selling them to others, but the sales to Allies will soon again, begin,” Trump wrote on social media. He also blamed the Biden administration for providing aid that he argued European countries should have financed. Reuters reported last month that the U.S. Army had depleted much of its inventory of certain precision long-range missiles during the Iran war.

The announcement comes after the U.S. and NATO established the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List, an arrangement under which European countries finance purchases of American weapons for Ukraine. Trump is now talking about going considerably further by seeking money for assistance already delivered. His remarks also arrive as the wars involving Ukraine and Iran increasingly collide with another problem back home: Energy prices, with oil hitting six-week highs amid renewed Middle East fighting.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the U.S. is experiencing an “energy shock,” attributing pressure both to the Iran war and Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure. Add depleted weapons inventories, expensive fuel, and two wars consuming military resources, and Washington’s foreign-policy problems are increasingly arriving with domestic price tags attached. Whether Europe actually agrees to reimburse the United States for previously provided Ukraine assistance is another question entirely—the president has announced his intention to ask.

Romanian prosecutors formally indicted Andrew Tate on September 4 on charges including trafficking minors, money laundering, sex with a minor, and witness tampering, adding another criminal case to the international legal battles surrounding Tate and his brother Tristan.

For two men already sitting in a U.S. jail while Britain seeks their extradition, Romania just added considerably more paperwork to the itinerary.

Romanian authorities have investigated the brothers since 2022, alleging that they recruited victims by seducing them and falsely promising relationships or marriage before coercing them into producing pornographic webcam content. Tristan Tate was indicted for complicity, according to Reuters. Both brothers deny wrongdoing, and their Romanian lawyer said: “Our clients continue to reject the allegations against them.”

The brothers, dual U.S.-British citizens who have lived primarily in Romania since 2017, were arrested in Miami in July after Britain requested their extradition on rape charges. They remain jailed in the United States while a judge considers that request. Romania’s DIICOT anti-organized crime unit has not yet determined whether it will also seek their extradition from the U.S.

A Romanian trial isn’t imminent. The indictment must first pass through a preliminary court chamber, where a judge reviews the case for legal and procedural compliance—a process that can extend well beyond the nominal 60-day period. Romania can ultimately try the Tates in absentia. For Andrew Tate, who once publicly said he chose Romania because he believed its law enforcement was more lax, that assessment has aged about as gracefully as warm milk.

House Republicans came up short Wednesday on a constitutional amendment that would have permanently capped the Supreme Court at nine justices, losing 212-206 despite technically winning more votes than they lost. The catch is that constitutional amendments need a two-thirds majority, not a simple one, so the real function of the vote was political theater ahead of the midterms — paired with a 220-192 resolution condemning socialism that eight Democrats also backed. Speaker Mike Johnson framed both votes as an easy call Democrats somehow failed, while Democrats like Sen. Jim Clyburn have kept alive talk of expanding the court to 13 seats, a idea also floated by Kamala Harris. A federal judge blocked President Trump’s latest attempt to restrict birthright citizenship, ruling the new executive orders are “almost certainly unconstitutional” just two months after the Supreme Court rejected his broader version of the same idea. U.S. District Judge Deborah Boardman wrote that Trump’s Aug. 6 orders — which target children of “alien enemy” parents, foreign-government employees, and so-called birth tourism — ran straight into a legal wall the Supreme Court had already built, since the 14th Amendment’s citizenship guarantee had already been settled in a 6-3 ruling this June.
