Costco Faces Major Labor Showdown as Thousands of Workers Prepare to Strike

With a critical contract deadline looming at midnight, thousands of Costco workers are preparing to go on strike, potentially disrupting operations at one of America’s most successful retailers. Represented by the Teamsters union, 18,000 workers across six states—California, Washington, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, and New York—have overwhelmingly voted to strike unless Costco agrees to a contract that reflects its soaring profits.

The stakes are high for both sides. Costco reported $254 billion in revenue in its last fiscal year, with net income hitting $7.36 billion—double its 2019 profits. Teamsters leaders argue that these record-breaking earnings should translate into better pay and benefits for the employees who helped make the company a retail giant.

“Costco has two choices: respect the workers who made them a success or face a national strike,” said Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien. “Costco Teamsters deserve an industry-leading contract that reflects the company’s massive profits. If Costco thinks they can exploit our members while raking in billions, we’ll shut them down.”

Will Stores Shut Down?

While a strike could have a significant impact on operations, it's unclear if it would force store closures. Costco employs 219,000 workers across 617 U.S. locations, but the labor contract in question applies to fewer than 10% of stores. However, disruptions in warehouses and distribution centers could create supply chain issues that ripple through the company.

Costco Responds

Costco maintains that it has a long history of good-faith negotiations with the Teamsters and is working to reach a fair agreement.

“We have always treated our employees fairly and well throughout the history of our company,” Costco said in a statement.

Still, with the strike deadline just hours away, pressure is mounting. A potential walkout could not only impact Costco's bottom line but also test the company's reputation as a worker-friendly employer in the highly competitive retail industry.

The next few hours will determine whether Costco and the Teamsters can reach a deal—or if one of the biggest labor strikes in retail history is about to unfold.
