A federal court just kneecapped Donald Trump’s mid-decade Texas redistricting push, forcing the state back to its 2021 map and likely saving Democrats up to five House seats in 2026.
A 2-1 judicial panel issued a preliminary injunction blocking Texas’s freshly drawn congressional lines and ordered the state to stick with the map it approved after the 2020 census. That’s not a small tweak—Republicans were banking on the new lines to tilt as many as five additional districts their way, a big deal in a razor-thin House.
As the opinion put it, “In a stinging setback for President Donald Trump and Republicans, a federal court on Tuesday blocked a newly drawn congressional map in Texas that Republicans hoped would have given them an edge in five more House seats.” Translation: the court saw this for what it was—a partisan power grab dressed up as routine map maintenance.
This whole fight exists because Trump leaned on Texas Republicans to do something states almost never do: redraw congressional lines in the middle of the decade instead of waiting for the next census. That stunt helped ignite a coast-to-coast redistricting arms race, with both parties carving and recarving maps ahead of the 2026 midterms to lock in whatever advantages they can before voters even show up.
All of it lands in a House where Republicans hold just a 219-214 majority and only a handful of races will decide who runs the chamber. Keeping those five Texas districts even vaguely competitive doesn’t guarantee Democrats a majority—but it absolutely keeps the GOP from quietly padding the scoreboard before the game starts.
