Did Tesla’s Cybertruck Muffle a Deadly Blast? Experts Say, “Not So Fast”
The Tesla Cybertruck involved in a dramatic explosion outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas has sparked debate over its durability. While Tesla CEO Elon Musk praised the Cybertruck's design, claiming it "contained the explosion and directed the blast upward," experts say the vehicle's performance might not deserve all the credit. The blast, which killed the driver but left the truck largely intact and spared the hotel’s glass doors, also raised questions about the nature of the materials used in the explosion.
Investigators have pointed to low-grade explosives, such as fireworks and fuel, as the likely cause of the incident. “You didn’t really have an explosion as much as you had a bonfire,” said Karl Brauer, executive analyst at ISeeCars.com. He noted that much of the energy from the explosion was released through the truck’s windows and bed, minimizing damage. Other experts, including Richard Meier of Meier Fire Investigations, agree that the materials used played a bigger role than the vehicle's design. “If the vehicle had not been coated in steel, you may get a little more shrapnel, but the explosion would not be that different,” Meier explained.
Authorities are still investigating the incident, which is believed to be a suicide involving 37-year-old Army Special Forces soldier Matthew Livelsberger. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives noted the explosion’s lack of sophistication was unusual given the driver’s military background. The exact role, if any, of the Cybertruck’s electric batteries in the explosion remains under review.
