FBI Blocks Minnesota Probe Into Deadly ICE Shooting, Shutting State Investigators Out

The FBI didn’t just close the door on Minnesota’s investigation into a fatal ICE shooting—it deadbolted it and walked away with the key.
Minnesota officials say their investigation into the killing of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good has been effectively crippled after the FBI refused a previously agreed-upon joint probe, cutting state investigators off from the evidence they need. For a case already inflaming national tensions over ICE conduct, the federal freeze-out looks less like “standard procedure” and more like a bureaucratic blackout.
Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) Superintendent Drew Evans laid out the gut punch clearly: federal officials initially greenlit a joint investigation, only to reverse course and lock the state out entirely. “The investigation would now be led solely by the FBI, and the BCA would no longer have access to the case materials, scene evidence or investigative interviews necessary to complete a thorough and independent investigation,” he wrote. Translation: Minnesota is being told to solve a puzzle while the feds hide all the pieces.
Evans didn’t mince words about what that means for accountability. “Without complete access to the evidence, witnesses and information collected, we cannot meet the investigative standards that Minnesota law and the public demands.” So the agency withdrew—because why pretend it can run an investigation that the federal government has already kneecapped?
Meanwhile, video from the scene shows Good backing away as ICE officers converged before an agent opened fire, hitting her three times in the face. Yet federal officials, including President Donald Trump, insist the shooting was self-defense, with Trump dismissing Good as “a professional agitator.” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey was having none of it: “That is bullshit,” he said flatly. And honestly, if the facts were so ironclad, why barricade the evidence?
