Foreign Footprints Exposed in MAGA Influencer Ranks on X
The curtain finally lifted—and a whole lot of “America First” isn’t American at all.
Elon Musk’s platform just unleashed its new “About This Account” feature, meant to boost transparency, and instead torched the illusion that many of X’s loudest MAGA voices are waving the flag from anywhere but the United States. Rivals instantly dove into the metadata—and what they uncovered was a full-blown geography lesson no one on the right wanted.
Dozens of major “Patriot,” “America First,” and MAGA-branded accounts were unmasked as operations run from Russia, India, Nigeria, Eastern Europe, and beyond. As Democratic influencer Harry Sisson put it: “Seeing all of these MAGA accounts get exposed as foreign actors trying to destroy the United States is a complete vindication…” And he’s not wrong—this wasn’t one or two accounts slipping through; it was a pattern.
One of the biggest offenders? MAGANationX—nearly 400,000 followers, a bio pledging to be the “Patriot Voice for We The People,” and…based in Eastern Europe. Another heavy hitter, IvankaNews, with a million followers and nonstop anti-immigration rhetoric, turns out to be posting from Nigeria. Even prominent left-wing influencer Micah Erfan couldn’t resist summing it up: “It’s looking like half of their large accounts were foreigners posing as Americans all along.”
The feature itself briefly disappeared—right after the mass unmasking—only to reappear later. X’s product chief admitted there were “rough edges,” including the fact that VPNs could obscure location, something they claim they’ll eventually patch. But the damage is done: users saw enough to confirm that foreign influence operations aren’t hypothetical—they’re already baked into the discourse.
The broader concern is bigger than just online embarrassment. Foreign-run accounts help shape narratives, pressure lawmakers, and flood the zone with disinformation—all while cashing in on X’s engagement-for-money model. Hard truth: if you’re tweeting for dollars from Lagos or Moscow, stirring up U.S. chaos is simply good business.
