Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, the nation's 39th president and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, passed away today at the age of 100. He died peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by family.
Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Carter graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946 and served in the Navy until 1953. He then returned to Georgia to manage his family's peanut farming business. His political career began in the Georgia State Senate (1963-1967), followed by a term as Georgia's governor (1971-1975). In 1976, he was elected President, serving from 1977 to 1981. His administration is noted for achievements such as the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, the Panama Canal treaties, and the establishment of the Departments of Energy and Education. However, his presidency also faced challenges, including economic difficulties and the Iran hostage crisis.
After losing the 1980 election to Ronald Reagan, Carter dedicated himself to humanitarian efforts. In 1982, he founded the Carter Center, focusing on human rights, conflict resolution, and public health initiatives. His work in global peace and health earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Carter was also a prominent supporter of Habitat for Humanity, contributing to affordable housing projects worldwide.
Carter's death comes 13 months after the passing of his wife, Rosalynn Carter, in November 2023. They were married for 77 years and had four children: Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy.
Tributes have poured in from leaders worldwide. President Joe Biden remarked, "Jimmy Carter saved, lifted, and changed the lives of people all across the globe." Former President Donald Trump acknowledged Carter's efforts during a pivotal time in American history, stating, "For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude."
Public observances are planned in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., followed by a private burial in Plains, Georgia, where Carter will be laid to rest alongside his wife.
