Health and Human Services Is Trashing the 988 Suicide and Crisis Hotline
The carelessness and cruelty IS the point.
The Health and Human Services (HHS) is set to cut crucial services for LGBTQ youth via the national suicide and crisis hotline, 988, according to a leaked budget draft. If passed by Congress, the cuts, which would go into effect in October, threaten a program that has been vital for LGBTQ youth—who are four times more likely to attempt suicide than their peers. This service has received over 1.3 million calls, texts, and chats since its inception in 2022, offering culturally competent support to at-risk youth facing discrimination, harassment, and lack of family support.
"Here we are cutting off the nation’s lifeline to those in crisis," said Paolo del Vecchio, former director of SAMHSA’s Office of Recovery.
“I worry deeply that we will see more LGBTQ young people reach a crisis state and not have anyone there to help them through that,” said Janson Wu, director at The Trevor Project.
