Hundreds of U.S. Marines Deployed to Los Angeles
The Pentagon confirmed Monday that roughly 700 Marines will support the California National Guard in protecting federal personnel and property in Los Angeles. This temporary deployment aims to cover gaps until more National Guard troops arrive.
President Donald Trump publicly backed arresting California Governor Gavin Newsom for what he called obstruction of federal immigration enforcement efforts. In response, Newsom and California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced they will sue Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, challenging the legality of the National Guard deployment.
California Takes Trump to Court Over National Guard Deployment in Los Angeles
California has filed a lawsuit accusing President Trump of illegally deploying 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles without state consent.
The lawsuit contends that Trump’s federalization of the California National Guard without Newsom’s consent violates the Constitution and exceeds presidential authority, marking the first such move since 1965. “We have a winning case here,” Bonta declared.
Newsom condemned Trump’s actions as an “unmistakable step toward authoritarianism” and warned the order sets a dangerous precedent for federal intervention in any state. Trump defended the deployment as necessary to prevent Los Angeles from being “completely obliterated” during protests.
