Judge Eyes Criminal Contempt for Trump Administration Over Venezuelan Deportations
Will Judge Boasberg throw the book at Trump? No.
In a bold move, U.S. District Judge James Boasberg is set to consider criminal contempt proceedings against Trump administration officials for allegedly defying his order to halt the deportation of Venezuelan migrants.
This controversial decision could escalate the ongoing clash between the judiciary and the Trump administration, which has faced multiple legal challenges over its immigration policies.
On March 15, deportation flights continued despite Boasberg's clear directive to stop, prompting him to accuse the administration of a "willful disregard" of the court's authority.
Boasberg's actions come amid a broader confrontation between the Trump administration and the judiciary, which has blocked or slowed many of Trump's far-reaching policies. Although the Supreme Court recently ruled that the legal issue at hand should be taken out of Boasberg's court, the judge has persisted with the contempt proceedings, expressing frustration with the administration's failure to provide adequate explanations for the deportations. In his opinion, Boasberg wrote that the government's responses have been "unsatisfactory."
The controversy revolves around the administration's use of the Alien Enemies Act, a law dating back to World War II, to deport Venezuelan migrants. This law, historically used for wartime internment, has raised concerns about its application in a modern context, with critics accusing the Trump administration of overstepping its legal bounds. Boasberg's courtroom interrogation of Justice Department officials has highlighted the ongoing tension between executive power and judicial oversight.

We are NOT in a declared war. Any judge should see past this malarky and call Trump on everything around and about it!

We should be at war right now with this corrupt administration. trump will continue his lawless, evil plundering of our country. Words won’t stop him, protest marches won’t stop him, the courts can’t stop him. The people need to declare the 1798 Alien Act on the hideous regime.
