Judge Orders Release of Palestinian Student Activist Arrested During Citizenship Interview
In a victory for Palestinian student activist Mohsen Mahdawi, a judge has ordered his release after he was arrested during a routine citizenship interview in Vermont.
Mahdawi, a legal permanent resident of 10 years and vocal critic of the Gaza war, was detained by immigration officials on April 14 while finalizing his U.S. citizenship process. His arrest, which has sparked outrage, is seen by his lawyers as retaliation for his advocacy of Palestinian human rights.
Outside the courthouse, Mahdawi led chants of “The people united will never be defeated,” echoing his defiance against the charges brought against him. He called for global solidarity in defending democracy and humanity, declaring, “What is going to happen in America is going to affect the rest of the world.”
The government argued that Mahdawi's detention was part of the deportation process, citing his actions as detrimental to U.S. foreign policy. However, the judge's ruling overruled this, granting his release as supporters rallied behind him.
Mahdawi, who had recently completed coursework at Columbia University, was set to graduate in May and begin a master's program in the fall. His arrest follows a pattern of increasing scrutiny of activists critical of U.S. foreign policy, raising concerns about free speech and political persecution.
