Judge Rules Mahmoud Khalil's Case Will Stay in New Jersey

Denies Government’s Request to Move It

In a major legal victory for pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, U.S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz has ruled that his case will remain in New Jersey, rejecting the government’s bid to move it to Louisiana. The decision comes after a federal habeas corpus motion was filed to challenge Khalil’s detention. The judge affirmed that New Jersey courts have jurisdiction, as Khalil was in the state when the legal challenge was initiated.

Khalil, a Columbia University student and activist, was arrested on March 8, 2025, after playing a key role in pro-Palestinian student protests at the university. The Trump administration had previously argued for moving the case to Louisiana, where Khalil is being held, but Judge Farbiarz sided with Khalil’s legal team, stating that the petition was rightfully filed in New Jersey. This ruling is a crucial step in Khalil’s legal battle, with his wife, Noor Abdalla, expressing hope for his release.
