Beginning January 1, Pornhub will no longer be accessible to users in Florida, marking its latest response to a wave of restrictive age verification laws sweeping Republican-led states. The new legislation, HB3, requires adult websites to implement "anonymous age verification," a mandate Pornhub's parent company, Aylo, deems invasive and counterproductive. Florida residents attempting to access the site have already been greeted with a blunt pop-up: “YOU WILL LOSE ACCESS TO PORNHUB IN 14 DAYS.” The message continues, warning users that they’ll soon need to upload government-issued IDs to prove their age before accessing adult content—an alarming prospect for those concerned about privacy and safety.
The fallout from similar laws has been profound. Louisiana, the first state to implement such requirements, saw an 80% drop in Pornhub traffic last year. Aylo has argued that these laws drive users to unsafe, unregulated corners of the internet. "These people did not stop looking for porn," Aylo stated. "They just migrated to darker corners of the internet... that don’t take user safety seriously." The Free Speech Coalition, a trade group representing adult content platforms, echoed these concerns. Executive Director Alison Boden called the measures invasive, likening them to state censorship that burdens legal content creators and consumers alike.
Critics, including civil rights organizations like the ACLU, warn that Florida’s HB3 is overly broad and ripe for abuse. The law’s vague definition of “material harmful to minors” could be weaponized to suppress speech, further fueling the debate about the balance between protecting children and safeguarding privacy.
