A French court handed down the ruling Monday, convicting Le Pen along with eight other party members for misappropriating European Parliament funds. The judgment not only casts a shadow over her political legacy but also bars her from seeking public office—jeopardizing her anticipated run in the 2027 presidential election.

While the court has yet to specify the exact length of her political ineligibility, the consequences are already sending shockwaves through the French political establishment.

Le Pen stormed out of the courtroom before the judge had even finished reading her sentence—an act of defiance underscoring the gravity of the moment.

Prosecutors had called for a two-year prison sentence and a five-year ban from holding office. At the heart of the case: European Union funds meant for parliamentary work were funneled into party activities, including paying Le Pen’s bodyguard and personal assistant. Other party members were convicted of similarly misusing funds.

"There are 11 million people who voted for the movement I represent. So tomorrow, potentially, millions and millions of French people would see themselves deprived of their candidate in the election,” Le Pen told the court in an emotional pre-sentencing statement. She went on to claim that authorities were "only interested" in blocking her from running again, calling such a move “political death.”

Sounds like Le Pen thinks it was a witch hunt.

Le Pen’s National Rally has surged in popularity in recent years, capitalizing on growing discontent over immigration and national sovereignty. She finished second to President Emmanuel Macron in both the 2017 and 2022 elections, and her party has since gained significant traction.
