Stephen Miller: The Dark Horse for Trump's National Security Adviser

President Trump is reportedly considering Stephen Miller as the next National Security Adviser. Yes, that Stephen Miller—the man who’s made a career out of crafting divisive, inhumane immigration policies and alienating just about everyone who doesn’t share his extreme worldview.
Miller, currently Trump’s Homeland Security adviser, is now reportedly a top contender after Trump unceremoniously kicked Mike Waltz to the curb and nominated him to be the U.N. Ambassador. Sources say Miller has been running the Homeland Security Council “like clockwork,” but given that he’s notorious for being both a policy enforcer and a walking PR disaster, it’s hard to imagine that’s anything to celebrate.
What’s truly astonishing is that Trump, known for surrounding himself with a tight-knit group of loyalists, seems ready to load up Miller with even more power. As if Miller wasn’t already stretched thin running one of the most controversial government bodies in recent history, now he might get his hands on national security, too?
Because, clearly, what this country needs right now is more of Miller’s special brand of diplomacy.
Inside sources say Miller’s Homeland Security team has been “infinitely more effective” than the National Security Council, but isn’t that a low bar? How hard is it to look efficient when the bar’s set somewhere near the ground? The NSC’s tiny fraction of a staff still might have a better chance at keeping things together than Miller’s single-minded approach to power consolidation.
In true Trumpian fashion, this isn’t about competence. It’s about loyalty, and Miller has it in spades. But considering his track record of creating chaos and division, the question really becomes: Is this really the kind of leadership America needs?
Spoiler alert: it’s not.
