The KEY Takeaway from Day Three of the Democratic National Convention
I'm not gonna lie: I didn't watch it all last night
I admit, I ran out of steam near the end of the day yesterday and had to take care of personal family matters. So I didn’t get to watch most of the festivities.
But what I did take away was this, and it’s been gnawing at my gut for 25 years:
The Democrats ceded concepts like “freedom” and “patriot” too long ago. Last night, in continuance of a theme the past three days, they largely took those terms back.
You CAN be a proud Democratic patriot who cares about freedom. VP nominee Tim Walz said it like this:
“When Republicans use the word — freedom — they mean that the government should be free to invade your doctor’s office, corporations free to pollute your air and water, and banks free to take advantage of customers. But when we Democrats talk about freedom, we mean the freedom to make a better life for yourself and the people that you love, freedom to make your own health-care decisions and, yeah, your kids’ freedom to go to school without worrying about being shot dead in the hall.”
He’s 100 percent spot on the money. I stopped being a Republican when I realized they were no longer conservative. They didn’t care about small government, fiscal responsibility, or sovereign nations. They didn’t care about NOT getting involved in people’s personal lives.
They care more about promoting culture war topics. They hate. They are negative. There is nothing positive about their ideology.
What Democrats care about, and maybe haven’t pushed hard enough on, is freedom to live your life as you choose, to live not in fear of getting murdered by the latest nut with a gun.
My credo: Do no harm.
If what I do doesn’t affect you, then mind your own business.
It’s pretty simple.
