Another individual in Missouri likely contracted the virus, though their test results didn’t meet the official case criteria, and there’s no evidence of person-to-person transmission in this instance. Most human cases have been mild, presenting as minor eye infections and respiratory symptoms.
All cases except one in Missouri involved individuals with confirmed contact with infected farm animals. In Washington State and Colorado, workers exposed to infected chickens on farms where flocks were culled accounted for nine cases each, while the remaining cases were dairy farm workers. To date, 395 cow herds have tested positive for H5N1 across 14 states.
The steady rise in cases among both animals and humans has some experts concerned about the potential for a broader outbreak of this virus, which could pose a pandemic threat.
