As the MAGA base turns on Trump over his missteps in the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, the State Department took a bold, and frankly tone-deaf, step: slashing 1,353 Washington-based jobs—about 15% of staff—including brutal cuts to the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons (TIP Office). For 25 years, this office has been the U.S. government’s frontline in combating global sex and labor trafficking.
Now, it’s been decimated.
Despite bipartisan support and a critical role that includes producing a congressionally mandated report ranking countries on trafficking, the TIP Office lost roughly half its full-time staff on a Friday reduction in force (RIF). Even the people who survived got pay cuts and reassignment. Expertise and relationships built over decades were tossed aside with no strategic retention. One insider said bluntly, “The sheer number of cuts has really decimated the office.”
Politically, the timing is nothing short of ironic. Trump promised to expose Epstein’s elite clients but has alienated his own MAGA supporters by failing to deliver. Many in the base, fueled by QAnon conspiracies, see trafficking as a top fight. Yet, the very office designed to combat trafficking was neutered.
One source hinted the TIP Office’s aggressive stance and its inconvenient annual report ruffled feathers within the State Department, possibly sealing its fate.
