In a surprising reversal, the Trump administration has informed federal agencies that they can disregard Elon Musk’s directive requiring government employees to submit weekly bullet-point summaries of their work or face termination.
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) delivered the message to agency HR officials, clarifying that workers would not be let go for failing to comply. The decision signals a break between Trump and Musk, whose aggressive push to shrink the federal workforce has sparked confusion and resistance within government ranks.
Musk’s mandate, announced on his social media platform X, had sent shockwaves through federal agencies, with some employees fearing they could be forced out for noncompliance. The mass email, reportedly reaching millions—including judges and legislative staff—led to immediate internal debates about security risks and the feasibility of such a sweeping directive.
Despite Trump’s public comments that Musk’s idea was “pretty ingenious,” multiple agencies quickly reassured their employees that responding was optional.
“You are not required to respond, and there is no impact to your employment,” NASA’s acting administrator Janet Petro told staff.
The administration’s retreat comes amid broader tensions over Musk’s involvement in federal operations, particularly his role in workforce reductions and return-to-office mandates. While some departments remain aligned with Musk’s vision, others are actively rejecting it.
The Agriculture Department and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have both stated that employees would face no penalties for ignoring the request. The situation underscores an ongoing power struggle between Musk’s restructuring ambitions and federal agencies determined to maintain control over their operations.
