Trump Administration’s Proposal to Slash State Dept. Budget by Nearly 50 Percent Faces Growing Opposition

In a dramatic shift in U.S. foreign policy, the Trump administration has proposed cutting the State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) budgets by nearly 50%, targeting critical programs such as humanitarian assistance, global health initiatives, and support for international organizations like the U.N. and NATO.

According to an internal memo obtained by The Washington Post, this budget proposal would slash a staggering $27 billion, leaving a total of $28.4 billion for both agencies. This reduction represents a massive blow to U.S. global influence, with significant cuts to foreign peacekeeping and diplomatic programs.

The memo also outlines the merging of USAID into the State Department, alongside devastating cuts to essential funding for international peacekeeping missions and global health programs, including a 55% reduction in global health funding.

While some military and emergency health programs may retain funding, the proposal has sparked widespread criticism, with foreign policy experts warning that these cuts will empower adversaries like China and Russia.

Critics argue that the reductions risk abandoning America’s longstanding role in fostering international cooperation and support for global peace.

As the budget proposal moves through deliberations in Congress, lawmakers from both parties have expressed opposition, fearing that these cuts will undermine national security and global influence.

The American Foreign Service Association has condemned the plan as "reckless and dangerous," calling for Congress to reject any budget that threatens U.S. diplomatic and humanitarian efforts.
