President-elect Donald Trump's ambitious plan to overhaul Air Force One with two updated 747-8 jumbo jets may remain unrealized during his time in office, with delivery delays now pushing completion beyond 2029. The $3.9 billion contract with Boeing, initiated in Trump’s first term, included extensive updates and a redesign featuring his signature red, white, and dark blue color scheme—marking a departure from the iconic light blue and white introduced during John F. Kennedy's presidency. Despite Trump’s fervent involvement, the project’s delays have led to frustration, with the former president reportedly badgering Boeing executives and staff for answers.
One of the unexpected hurdles involves Trump’s proposed paint scheme. The Air Force raised concerns that the darker blue underside could lead to excessive heat, potentially exceeding the temperature limits for certain components. “Further analysis concluded darker colors, among other factors, on the underside of the VC-25B aircraft might contribute to temperatures exceeding the current qualification limits of a small number of components,” said Air Force spokesperson Ann Stefanek. Meanwhile, Boeing, which has faced significant production delays and financial challenges, emphasized its commitment to delivering the jets as an "extension of the Oval Office."
Boeing’s recent struggles have only compounded the delays. Following layoffs of 17,000 employees in 2023 and ongoing issues with safety compliance, the company has reportedly lost $25 billion since 2019. Despite Trump’s eagerness to see the project completed, it appears the revamped Air Force One may serve as a legacy for his successor rather than as a hallmark of his presidency.
