And that’s the point—clarity shouldn’t be negotiable when dealing with symbols tied to genocide, white supremacy, and deep-seated intimidation.

The policy doesn’t just soften definitions; it adds barriers to reporting. Members now have 45 days to flag a noose or swastika—an impossible timeline for those deployed at sea. If you’re stuck onboard for months, good luck navigating that window while also navigating the threat of retaliation from whoever hung the symbol in the first place.

And while senators like Jacky Rosen are warning that this rollback arrives amid a spike in global antisemitism, the administration is plowing ahead, trimming down what used to be “hate incidents” into generic “harassment” cases. The military can debate readiness all it wants, but pretending a swastika is just “divisive” isn’t toughness—it’s avoidance dressed up as policy.
