Canada is not backing down from Washington, and it just proved it with tariffs of its own. Starting September 8, Ottawa is slapping retaliatory tariffs of 15%, 25% and 50% on $27.6 billion worth of U.S. goods, hitting everything from steel and dairy to appliances, clothing and golf equipment. The move matches America’s own 50% tariff on Canadian goods rate-for-rate, and Canada says it’s concentrating the pain in sectors most affected by U.S. tariffs, including steel, aluminum, dairy and electronics. Iran-backed Houthi rebels launched one of their most aggressive attacks yet on Saudi Arabia this week. Missiles and drones struck southern Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, wounding 73 people and setting fires at oil facilities including the massive Jazan refinery. The strikes hit civilian and economic targets across Abha, Jazan, Najran and Khamis Mushait, and the Houthis say they also targeted a Saudi air base. Saudi officials are calling it a serious escalation and promising retaliation, while the renewed violence threatens to reignite Yemen’s brutal civil war and has already displaced thousands of people in Taiz and Hodeida. The U.S. military’s campaign against Latin American drug trafficking just claimed its fifth vessel in under two weeks. Southern Command says it intercepted and sank an Ecuadorian boat allegedly serving as a floating refueling station for Los Choneros, a criminal group designated a foreign terrorist organization. Since the campaign began more than a year ago, at least 227 people have been killed in 68 strikes across the Caribbean and Pacific, and the Trump administration is now pushing similar operations onto land in Colombia, Guatemala and Honduras. The country has only about 4 million affordable rentals for 11 million extremely low-income renter households, yet cities like Austin, Denver and Portland have thousands of vacant “affordable” units built for people higher up the income ladder. Austin alone has more than 4,500 empty affordable units even as it built just 543 of a promised 20,000 homes for its poorest residents.
