I think the difference in many people's mind is that 9/11 was "them" and the capital was "us". They didn't LOOK any different than us so many weren't as upset. Personally January 6 hit me in the gut - it was betrayal by our fellow citizens. People who might live next door. Yet our country was so divided some felt they needed to follow their fellow traitors into the capitol. Mob mentality. Based on the number of family, friends, and neighbors who have turned in January 6 rioters, I think a lot of people agree - they attacked us! Sadly, there are still millions of Americans who believed it was justified - because trump told them it was. But don't get me started on the cult followers.
The 9/11 attack was terrible. I remember exactly where I was when it happened. It was shocking.
I could say the exact thing about 1/6.
The difference to me is what you suggested - it was an "inside job" and it hurts in a different way and possibly cuts deeper. Some of these folks were our family, friends, and neighbors.
